To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Confucius Institutes worldwide, the Confucius Classroom at Suankularb Wittayalai School held a series of activities for the Chinese Language Week from August 18 to 25, which created a good atmosphere for the upcoming Confucius Institute Day. More than 1,500 teachers and students participated actively in various activities.

The activities mainly included Chinese Character Writing Competition, Chinese Poetry Reading Contest, Chinese Speech Contest, Chinese Song Contest, Questions and Answers, as well as Lucky Draw. The material for the Poetry Reading Contest was a Chinese poem written by H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand: “Colorful days, spring gardens contend in beauty. Brotherhood of Chinese and Thai peoples lasts forever.” Chen Songsong, the person in charge of the Chinese side, said that “This poem was chosen because it could make students feel the lasting friendship between Chinese and Thai peoples as well as the emphasis of Thai Royal Family on Sino-Thai friendship, which would imperceptibly impel students to learn Chinese language with greater enthusiasm.”

At the ceremony on August 25, 2014, Amnuai Chanhom, Principal of Suankularb Wittayalai School, awarded certificates to winners of the various competitions of the Chinese Language Week. Then the first prize winner of each competition demonstrated his/her achievement. Chen Nanhui, the champion of the Chinese Speech Contest, gave a three-minute speech. He won waves of warm applauses with his clear and accurate pronunciation, natural intonation, and his graceful stage manners. After that, the song Hey Girl, Look This Way sung by the champion of Chinese Song Contest Li Xiaolong aroused an upsurge of interest among the audience. The following performances such as the Group Performance, Five-step Boxing, Kung Fu Fan, and Tongbeiquan (spreading power from the back boxing), which were orderly and magnificent, pushed the atmosphere to a climax.

At the award ceremony, the Confucius Classroom introduced to over 1,500 teachers and students the rapid development of Chinese language teaching in Thailand in the past decade, the upcoming Confucius Institute Day and the plan made by the Confucius Classroom for this day, and then welcomed the whole school to participate actively in the Confucius Institute Day in September. Although the Chinese Language Week was over, the Chinese fever at Suankularb Wittayalai School is growing increasingly stronger.
