On September 14, the “Confucius Institute Cup” MTCSOL (Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages) Teaching Competition, co-sponsored by the Confucius Institute Headquarters and the National Guiding Committee of Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL), was held in Beijing Language and Culture University. After rounds of selection, 12 Chinese students and 10 foreign students made it to the finals.

With the support of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, the foreign award winners of the competition would return to their own countries and become Chinese language teachers or spreaders of Chinese culture at the local Confucius Institutes or other related Chinese language training institutions through programs such as Confucius Institute Head Teacher Position Program and Local Chinese Teacher Program, and the Chinese award winners, according to relevant standards and regulations, would be recommended to join the team of full-time Chinese language teachers of the Confucius Institute Headquarters.

The finals were comprised of different sections, including a quiz about the knowledge of Chinese language and culture, cultural talent shows as well as teaching skill presentations. The questions covered almost everything from traditional Chinese culture (e.g. geography, ethnic groups, operas, traditional Chinese medicine, history, traditional holidays, Chinese zodiac, etc.) and basic knowledge of Chinese characters (e.g. fonts, pinyin, idioms, word formation, order of strokes, etc.) to language comprehension and use (e.g. different interpretations of ‘鸡不吃了’ ‘ji bu chi le’ (lit. ‘chicken not eat-le’, in Chinese this sentence can be interpreted as ‘the chicken has stopped eating’ or ‘(I) won’t eat the chicken’), reading aloud ‘他买完东西出来就分不清东西了’ ‘ta mai wan dongxi chulai jiu fenbuqing dong xi le’ (‘He could not tell which way was to dong (the east) and which was to xi (the west) after buying dongxi (some things)’), etc.).

The foreign students’ enthusiasm about traditional Chinese culture and knowledge about modern China amazed the 400-plus teachers and students present from seven universities that have the MTCSOL program.

To better popularize the Chinese language globally and train talents specialized in Chinese language teaching and Chinese culture transmission overseas under the new international circumstance of Chinese promotion, the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council specially established the MTCSOL program in March 2007. Up to now, a total of 20,793 postgraduates, among whom 15,741 are Chinese and 5,052 are foreigners, have received education in the MTCSOL program.

In 2009, the Confucius Institute Headquarters started to offer Confucius Institute Scholarships to encourage foreign students to come to China for the MTCSOL program, which was an important move to help train local Chinese language teachers. To date, more than 3,500 out of 5,052 foreign students from over 100 countries have graduated, and most of them have returned to their countries to teach Chinese language.
