From 6th to 21st July, 2014, a total of 17 students carefully selected from the Confucius Institute at Vilnius University in Lithuania and its affiliated teaching sites participated in a two-week summer camp on the theme of “realizing Chinese dreams, connecting with Liaoning University” in Beijing and Shenyang, China. With good levels of proficiency in Chinese, these students hold keen interests in Chinese language and culture and have always hoped to visit and experience China by themselves.

Students visiting the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban)

Students visiting the Great Wall

During their stay in Beijing, the students started their tour by visiting the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban). This year marks the 10th anniversary of Confucius Institutes; therefore, a friendship tree made of amber was bequeathed as a gift to the Headquarters by a representative of all the participants of the summer camp. They also extended their sincere hopes that the friendship between Lithuania and China will last forever and young people in both countries will become ambassadors, bridges and links for the exchanges between the two countries. In the next three days, the students visited the Great Wall, the Temple of Heaven, the Forbidden City and the Summer Palace and appreciated the grandeur of the Tiananmen Square and the beauty of the Bird's Nest. They also wandered about the hutong of Nanluoguxiang, enjoyed Beijing Opera, tasted Beijing roasted ducks and visited the Chinese courtyards. All these activities provided the students with great abundance of experience in Chinese culture and special charms of Beijing.

After their trip in Beijing, the students of the summer camp travelled to Shenyang, capital of Liaoning Province in northern China. During their stay in Shenyang, even though the schedule was tight, the students all felt very fulfilling because the fascinating Chinese lessons prepared by Liaoning University offered them new knowledge and understanding of Chinese culture every day. On the one hand, they had wonderful experience of Chinese culture, including learning Peking Opera, watching tea art performance, imitating Chinese calligraphy and appreciating Chinese paintings. On the other hand, they did field trips to some places of interest in Shenyang, such as Shenyang Expo Garden, Liaoning Provincial Museum, Imperial Palace in Shenyang, Shenyang Calligraphy and Painting Academy, the Shenyang Culture Square, and so on. Through these activities, the static descriptions about China in the books were all turned into vivid and concrete experience, which the students enjoyed to the fullest extent.

The farewell party

At the farewell party, participants of the summer camp from Australia, Russia, Lithuania, South Korea and Japan gathered together with the student volunteers from Liaoning University had a grand celebration on the theme of “realizing Chinese dreams, connecting with Liaoning University”. During the celebration, the Lithuanian students sang the song “Auld Lang Syne” in Chinese to express their heartfelt love for Chinese culture and deep affection towards their new teachers and friends.
