Roundtable of the Council of the Confucius Institute Headquarters held in Changchun

On August 9, the 2014 Roundtable of the Council of the Confucius Institute Headquarters was held in Changchun, the capital city of Jilin Province. Mr. Wang Rulin, Secretary of Jilin Provincial Party Committee;Mr. Zhang Bojun, Vice-chairman of Jilin Provincial CPPCC and Director General of the Education Department of Jilin Province; Mr. Su Zhongmin, Deputy Director General of the Education Department of Jilin Province; Mr. Zhou Mingwei, President of the China Foreign Languages Publishing Administration; Madame Xu Lin, Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters and Director General of Hanban; and Mr. Li Yuanyuan, President of Jilin University attended and addressed the meeting.

A total of 17 Chinese and foreign council members, honorary council members and senior advisors from 11 countries held extensive exchanges and discussions around issues such as the Confucius Institutes operational criteria, the standard of model Confucius Institutes, the function of the Academy for Confucius Institute Directors, the function of the regional representative offices of the Confucius Institute Headquarters and the quality evaluation system of Confucius Institutes.

All the attendees agreed that Confucius Institutes offer the best platform for China to communicate with the rest of the world, and their sound development requires joint efforts and international cooperation. They said that the Confucius Institutes need to strengthen the collaboration with their host universities and integrate into the local society.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the establishment of Confucius Institutes. Confucius Institutes have played an important role in helping foreign people learn Chinese language and understand Chinese culture, facilitating educational and cultural exchanges and cooperation between China and other countries and enhancing friendship between the Chinese and other peoples. Up to now, the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) has opened 457 Confucius Institutes and 707 Confucius Classrooms in 122 different countries and regions.
