The 13th “Chinese Bridge” Competition concludes in Changsha

CHANGSHA, August 3 (Hunan Daily) — After one month’s cut-throat competition, the finals of the 13th “Chinese Bridge” — Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students were successfully held in the capital city of Hunan Province Changsha. Mr. Xu Jialu, former Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, Mr. Xu Shousheng, Secretary of the Hunan Provincial Party Committee and Director of the Standing Committee of the Hunan Provincial People’s Congress and Mr. Du Jiahao, Deputy Secretary of the Hunan Provincial Party Committee and Governor of Hunan Province, presented the awards to the winners.

Attendees of the award ceremony also included Madam Xu Lin, Counselor of the State Council, Chief Executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters and Director General of Hanban as well as Hunan provincial leaders Xu Yousheng, Han Yongwen, Liu Lianyu, Li Youzhi and Ouyang Bin.

From July to August this year, 126 outstanding college students from 110 divisions in 87 countries gathered together in Changsha to compete in the semi-finals and finals of the Competition. In the finals, Brazilian contestant Shi Moli (Cunha da Silva Monica) from South America, after two rounds of fierce competition – the sitcom performance of New Silk Road and the Q&A session, eventually won the all-round championship. She also won the championship of America. South Korean contestant Cheng Weixian (Sung Yusun), Russian contestant Lei Mingda (Kuzmin Nikita), Zimbabwean contestant Ma Mingyuan (Mhembere Anesu) and Australian contestant Luo Lianna (Morrison Rebecca Claire Cuthbert) respectively won the championship of Asia, Europe, Africa and Australia.

“Through 13 years’ continuous efforts, the ‘Chinese Bridge’ Competition has achieved remarkable results. I hope that we can pass the ‘Chinese Bridge’ Competition on to our future generations.” said Mr. Xu Jialu, “The world is diverse, and only through cultural exchanges among different countries can the world culture be more splendid. I hope that the ‘Chinese Bridge’ Competition can really serve as bridges that connect people from the five continents and play an important role in facilitating the communication among different peoples, languages and cultures and promoting the world peace and human harmony. I also hope that the ‘Chinese Bridge’ Competition can better integrate Chinese culture with contestants’ local cultures.”

The “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students, a major international Chinese language proficiency competition, is sponsored by the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban). Since 2002, the competition has been successfully held for 13 sessions. Nearly 400,000 college students worldwide have participated in the preliminary contests, among whom over 1,300 students from more than 90 countries have been invited to China for the semi-finals and finals. The “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students has become an important platform for college students around the world to learn Chinese and understand China.
