In his speech, Prof. Zhu Chongshi said that the establishment of Confucius Institutes is a cause to raise people’s multicultural awareness and to promote cultural exchanges among different countries. In response to the Government’s call, Xiamen University has been devoting itself to this remarkable cause since 2006. In cooperation with Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban), the University has included the development of Confucius Institutes into its comprehensive development plan and has achieved a lot in co-establishing Confucius Institutes and popularizing Chinese language. Mr. Zhu remarked that the establishment of the Academy for Confucius Institute Directors is of great importance for the Confucius Institute Headquarters to facilitate sound and rapid development of Confucius Institutes, and that it is really a great honor of Xiamen University to be entrusted with this task by the Confucius Institute Headquarters. Also, this project will greatly help Xiamen become a more international city. Therefore, in order to ensure the success of this landmark project, the University will make great efforts to leverage as many resources as possible to create favorable conditions for it.

On behalf of Xiamen Municipal Government, Ms. Guo Guirong expressed her congratulations on the Academy’s groundbreaking. She noted that Xiamen University boasts not only a strong teaching and scientific research faculty but also a rich culture of humanities education. The groundbreaking of the Academy for Confucius Institute Directors marks a milestone, because it will make Xiamen internationally well-known and enhance the city’s international cultural and talent exchanges. She pledged that the government will pave the way for the development of the Academy through constantly improving service efficiency, ameliorating the environment for urban development and lending full support to all the work regarding the Academy’s construction. She believed that Xiamen University will build a bridge of mutual learning and understanding between China and the rest of the world to truly embrace the blend of language and culture and to popularize Chinese language globally.

Madam Xu Lin explained that Xiamen University’s unique advantageous geographic conditions and cultural environment make it an ideal place for the construction of the Academy. She said that the Academy should serve as “one platform and six centers”, namely, a global Chinese language network-based multimedia platform, a center for director and faculty training, a center for information and resource sharing, a center for teaching material, curriculum and courseware development, a center for tests and evaluation, a center for sinology studies and a center for market development. Meanwhile, the Academy should embody different cultures of different nations, so it needs to have one hundred national flags, one hundred sculptures of renowned figures from different countries, one hundred world famous songs, books, magazines and other reading materials from different countries as well as diverse species of plants from one hundred countries. In the end, Madam Xu extended her gratitude to Xiamen University and Xiamen Municipal Government for their generous support.

Attendees also included 40 Confucius Institute directors from 21 countries and representatives of faculty and students from Xiamen University.
