International Seminar on the Sustainable Development of Culture and International Chinese Language Education and 9th Executive Council Meeting of the International Society for Chinese Language Teaching held in Beijing

On July 18, hosted by the International Society for Chinese Language Teaching and Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban), the International Seminar on the Sustainable Development of Culture and International Chinese Language Education and 9th Executive Council Meeting of the International Society for Chinese Language Teaching was held in Beijing. A total of 35 experts, executive directors and specially-invited directors from Austria, Australia, Denmark, Russia, South Korea, the US, Portugal, Japan, Thailand, Hungary, Italy, the UK, Chile and China attended the seminar.


Attendees also included Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the 9th and 10th National People’s Congress and President of the International Society for Chinese Language Teaching Mr. Xu Jialu and President of Beijing Normal University Mr. Dong Qi, both of whom gave speeches at the seminar. Deputy Chief Executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters, Deputy Director General of Hanban and Vice President of the International Society for Chinese Language Teaching Mr. Ma Jianfei hosted the seminar.

With the theme of ‘the sustainable development of culture and international Chinese language teaching’, the seminar centered on the following four issues, Confucius Institutes and cross-cultural communication, cross-cultural competence and faculty development, syllabus for cultural education, and Chinese language teaching in a multi-cultural context. The exchanges and discussions were aimed at gathering opinions and suggestions from the experts, developing a vision for the future development of Chinese language and culture education and building a high-end platform for academic exchanges on the sustainable development of international Chinese language education. The experts voiced their own views, and the intensive discussions and debates in turn helped them deepen their understanding. After the seminar, the experts’ papers and speeches will be compiled into the Seminar proceedings for publication, hoping that the International Society for Chinese Language Teaching can play a leading role of academic influence by allowing more people to benefit from the fruit of the Seminar.

On the evening of July 18, Mr. Xu Jialu chaired the 9th Executive Council Meeting of the International Society for Chinese Language Teaching. All the attendees discussed the theme and subjects of the 12th International Conference on Chinese Language Teaching to be held in 2015 and put forward good suggestions for the future development of the International Society for Chinese Language Teaching.

The experts said that this seminar was very enlightening since it not only enhanced their exchanges but also deepened their understanding of international Chinese language teaching, international promotion of Chinese culture and other issues.
