On the evening of June 11, 2014, the Rio de Janeiro Chinese Association in Brazil held a celebration for its 30th anniversary and the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Brazil. Qiao Jianzhen, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, was awarded the “Medal of Labor” by Brazil's Ministry of Labor. This was the first time in the history of Brazil that a foreigner received this honor. The celebration was attended by He Yafei, Deputy Director of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, Song Yang, Chinese Consul General in Rio de Janeiro, the special representative of the Governor of Rio de Janeiro State, Pedro Spadale, Director of the Office of International Relations of Rio de Janeiro State, and 200 persons from all circles of Brazilian society.
