Tai Chi Fan Cultural Experience Activity held by Confucius Institute at University of Rome La Sapienza, Italy

On April 11, 2014, Confucius Institute at University of Rome La Sapienza successfully held the Tai Chi Fan Chinese cultural experience activity. The participants were the twenty more Chinese language learners of the CI who loves playing Tai Chi Fan. The activity was planned and organized by Mr. Mo Fan, a CI volunteer teacher. Prof. Zhang Hong, Chinese director of the CI also attended the activity. The Institute had conducted sufficient investigation on the expectations and demands for the cultural experience activities of the Chinese language learners. Then it planned a series of “Wonderful China” cultural experience activities in accordance with the needs of the students, among which the Tai Chi Fan activity is the first of this series.

Mr. Mo Fan started with some basic knowledge and relevant philosophical thinking of Tai Chi Fan. Then he led the students to do some warm-ups such as regulations of mind, body movements and breaths. After the explanation, the students interestedly practiced Tai Chi Fan on the open ground of the Faculty of Oriental Studies at University of Rome La Sapienza. CI prepared Tai Chi Fans for the students. Under the guidance of the teacher, the students quickly learnt the movements. They became familiar with some movements step by step and exchanged with the teacher from time to time. The atmosphere was cheerful and orderly. Tai Chi Fan is a unique martial art which couples strength with gentleness and exercises both offense and defense. Tai Chi Fan is a perfect combination of grace and dignity. The students said that they did feel the charms of Chinese culture in person through this novel cultural experience activity.

Both the teacher and students wished to continue after the activity and they all looked forward to the coming activities. Confucius Institute at University of Rome La Sapienza also hoped that this series of cultural experience activities could better the promotion of Chinese culture education so that the students could learn the verve of Chinese culture.
