Inauguration ceremony held at the Confucius Institute at Hebrew University of Jerusalem

On May 19, 2014 local time, Liu Yandong, Vice Premier of China’s State Council who was visiting Israel, inaugurated the Confucius Institute at Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Those who attended the inauguration ceremony included Yuan Guiren, Minister of Education, Li Bin, Director of National Health and Family Planning Commission, Wang Chao, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Wang Weizhong, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Gao Yanping, Chinese Ambassador to Israel, Xu Lin, Chief Executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters and Director General of Hanban, Menahem Ben-Sasson, President of Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel, Wang Enge, President of Peking University, Chen Jining, President of Tsinghua University, and over 300 people from various sectors of society in Israel.

Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu congratulated on the establishment of the Confucius Institute through video, and pointed out that both the Chinese and Jewish people, with their long history, distinctive languages and glorious traditional culture, had made great contributions to the development of human civilization and could learn from each other in many aspects. He expressed his hope that the Confucius Institute, which might benefit both sides, could expand and deepen the scientific, technological and cultural exchanges between China and Israel. He also hoped that the students and staff of the Confucius Institute at Hebrew University of Jerusalem would have a successful future and everything would go smoothly with them. Nobel Laureate in Economic Sciences Professor Robert J. Aumann of Hebrew University of Jerusalem also sent a video to congratulate Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Peking University, co-organizers of the Confucius Institute. He said the establishment of the Confucius Institute at Hebrew University of Jerusalem was an important step for enhancing the academic, scientific and technological exchanges and cooperation between China and Israel.

In his speech, President Ben-Sasson of Hebrew University of Jerusalem extended his warm welcome and sincere gratitude to the Chinese guests coming from afar and stressed that Hebrew University of Jerusalem would take pride in its membership of the big family of Confucius Institutes all over the world. He also mentioned that the Confucius Institute at Hebrew University of Jerusalem would be dedicated to the research on traditional and contemporary Chinese culture, the translation of outstanding Chinese literary works, and the development of large-scale online Chinese teaching network, aiming at becoming the world first-class Confucius Institute.

In the warm applause of the audience, Vice Premier Liu Yandong mounted the platform and delivered an ebullient speech. She said that both the Chinese and Jewish people, striving through trials and tribulations and yet getting even stronger, had made great contributions to the development of human civilization. With a similar history and fate, the two peoples had developed close ties, especially in their co-resistance against Fascism and Militarism during the Second World War, and therefore built up profound friendship.

Madam Liu stressed that the cooperation agreement of the Confucius Institute at Hebrew University of Jerusalem, under the witness of the two countries’ prime ministers, signified the new phase of humanistic and cultural exchanges and cooperation between China and Israel. She pointed out that the youth of both China and Israel, being the future and hope of their own country and nation, would bear the responsibility of carrying forward and enhancing the friendship between the two countries. She also expressed her hope that the Confucius Institute, with its distinctive features and high standards, would play a greater role in promoting humanistic and cultural exchanges between the two countries. More and more Israeli young people, as she hoped, through learning Chinese language and culture, would know and understand the youth from China better. Therefore, they would together maintain, inherit, build and promote the friendship between China and Israel.

On behalf of Confucius Institute Headquarters, Vice Premier Liu Yandong invited 100 students from the Confucius Institute at Hebrew University of Jerusalem to attend the “Chinese Bridge” Summer Camp in China, and sent 3,000 Chinese language teaching books and cultural reading materials as gifts.

In the ceremony, hosted by two students from Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Peking University respectively, performances of singing, dancing, Chinese poetry recitation and martial arts were provided by students from Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Rehovot teaching hub of the Confucius Institute at Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Their wonderful performances won warm applauses from the audience, while the two hosts of the ceremony who spoke the national languages of each other very fluently made all the people present feel the charm of language exchanges.
