Chilean President Michelle Bachelet

On May 8, 2014, Chilean President Michelle Bachelet sent a letter to Xu Lin, Chief Executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters and Director General of Hanban, and Jaime Vatter G., President of the University of Saint Thomas of Chile, congratulating on the opening of the Confucius Institute Latin America Regional Center. The content of the letter is as follows:

Dear Director Xu Lin and President Jaime Vatter G.:

Thank you for inviting me to attend the opening ceremony of the Confucius Institute Latin America Regional Center.

I would have been very pleased to witness this important moment with you, but unfortunately, due to previously scheduled events, I am not able to attend it. Please accept my apology for this.

Although I am unable to attend the ceremony, I am fully aware that it will provide us an opportunity to promote our exchanges with China, a country with an exotic culture and a long-standing historical tradition. In this sense, the establishment of the Confucius Institute Latin America Regional Center will further deepen Chilean people’s understanding of China’s long cultural tradition on the basis of the close cooperation between Chile and China.

Finally, I would like to sincerely wish the opening ceremony a great success and extend my cordial greetings to the staff of the Confucius Institute Latin America Regional Center. Special thanks to the University of Saint Thomas for its productive work which made possible the establishment of the center in our country.

Yours sincerely,

Michelle Bachelet

Altogether 682 cultural activities of various kinds had been held and the total number of participants reached over 1.2 million.
