On May 10, 2014 local time, Xu Lin, Chief Executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters and Director General of Hanban, was invited to give a speech at the 2014 Graduation Ceremony of Middle Tennessee State University, USA and was awarded an honorary doctorate in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the establishment of Confucius Institutes, promotion of Chinese language teaching and enhancement of the educational and cultural exchanges between China and the US.

In the warm applause of over 10,000 teachers, students and distinguished guests, President McPhee put the ribbon, the symbol of honorary doctorate degree, on Xu Lin, Chief Executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters and Director General of Hanban, and awarded her the certificate. Dr. Xu Lin thus became the third person who received such an honor from this university with a history of 104 years. She said that this honor would encourage her to work even harder for promoting the mutual understanding and friendship between the peoples of China and the US.

Dr. Xu Lin said to thousands of graduates in the audience: “I feel honored to accept this honorary doctorate today, and I also realize that with this honor comes a great responsibility. To enhance the mutual understanding among peoples of the world, I will continue to work hard on promoting international education and cultural exchanges. In a world of globalization today, to master a foreign language and know more about other countries will help university students secure a foothold in society. For this, Confucius Institutes provide a good learning opportunity and a platform for exchanges. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the establishment of Confucius Institute. Today, there are more than 440 Confucius Institutes and 650 Confucius Classrooms in about 120 countries and regions across the world, teaching Chinese language to over 850,000 students. The United States is leading with 100 Confucius Institutes and more than 300 Confucius Classrooms. Last year, thousands of American principals, teachers and students visited China. Through Confucius Institutes, they got knowledge and understanding of China, and experienced Chinese culture. Many of them therefore fell in love with China. Meanwhile, Confucius Institutes serve as bridges for Chinese teachers and students to learn about American culture. Every year there are about 800 teachers offering Chinese language teaching services in various regions of the US. Confucius Institutes help draw closer the hearts of Chinese and American people, and enhance the mutual understanding between them.” She expressed that more emphasis will be put on cultural exchanges in the future.

President McPhee stressed that it was of great significance to promote the interactions between peoples of China and the US.

“Obviously, when you see China has developed into an important economic and political power of this century and the future, you realize that the relation between China and the US is particularly vital. The deeper the mutual understanding between China and the US becomes, the more the world will benefit from it.”

Middle Tennessee State University signed the agreement with Hanban in 2009 to establish jointly a Confucius Institute. In recent years, it has set up many exchange programs with various Chinese universities such as Communication University of China, Hunan Normal University, Hangzhou Normal University, Northwest Normal University, and North China University of Technology.
