On the night of February 20, 2014, the Peking Opera Lady Mu Guiying Takes Command was put on at the Kennedy Theatre of the University of Hawaii and will be done for eight consecutive nights. Over 300 people watched the premiere on February 20.

The Department of Theater and Dance of the University of Hawaii rehearses a Peking Opera every three to four years, and it has kept doing so for over 20 years. This series of performances of Lady Mu Guiying Takes Command were partly sponsored by Confucius Institute Headquarters and the Confucius Institute at the University of Hawaii, with Lisa Wei, a professor of the Department of Theater and Dance and famous Peking Opera performer, as its playwright and director, Professor Liu Changjiang, a member of the Confucius Institute Council and Director of the Center for Chinese Studies, as its music instructor, as well as three experts from the Peking Opera Theater of Jiangsu Province as its art advisers.

All the performers of this English version of Lady Mu Guiying Takes Command were foreigners, including the ones playing the leading and other classic roles such as Mu Guiying, She Saihua and Yang Wenguang. They immersed themselves in the characters and sang like experienced Peking Opera actors, showcasing their outstanding artistic techniques. In addition, the elaborately decorated stage, the authentic, bright-colored opera costumes and the beating of gongs and drums all displayed the special appeal of traditional Chinese operas. The performance of Lady Mu Guiying Takes Command not only gives the American people a chance to understand and appreciate the Peking Opera but serves as a platform and window for them to gain a better insight into traditional Chinese culture. After watching this English version of Peking Opera, many Americans said that they really loved traditional Chinese opera arts.
