“From the launch in June 2013 the Confucius Institute at Edge Hill University have worked extensively with schools. A unique aspect of our Confucius Institute programme is the establishment of major in teaching Chinese starting in September 2014. There are two full time 4-year programmes from September 2014: BA (Hons) Primary Modern Languages Education (Mandarin) with QTS, and BA (Hons) Secondary Modern Languages Education (Mandarin) with QTS. “

Dr. Li Fang mentioned that according to a report by the British Council, Mandarin Chinese would become one of the five most important languages and She also mentioned UK’s ambition announced by the UK Prime Minister, David Cameron during his visit to China in early December 2013, that is, to double the number of people learning Chinese languages in the UK from 200,000 to 400.000 by 2020.

This will lead to the increasing demands for teaching Mandarin in schools across England. She stated that “The Confucius Institute at Edge Hill University has key strengths in the teaching and training of teachers and staff in schools. By offering a major in teaching Mandarin, we expect to play a major part in supplying the several thousand Mandarin teachers that our country will need in the future.”
