On February 1, 2014, the second day of the first lunar month, the Confucius Institute in La Rochelle in France successfully held the celebration activity of the Chinese Lunar New Year of the Horse in Rochefort Lucille Garden Nursing Home. A team of teachers, students and volunteers of the Confucius Institute led by Director Han brought the elderly a variety of wonderful Chinese-style programs, which made the elderly and their families experience the happiness and harmony of Chinese Spring Festival.

Upon arrival, the teachers and students of the Confucius Institute started to decorate the room in an orderly way with bright red banners, lanterns and Chinese knots which fully expressed the joyful atmosphere of the Spring Festival. When it was about 12 o’clock, Mr. Francois Viyella, the warden of the nursing home, invited the teachers and students of the Confucius Institute to have Chinese lunch together with the elderly, and they had a good time together. During the meal, the teachers and students asked the birthday of the elderly, helped them figure out their zodiac signs, and told them the historical stories behind the origin of the Chinese zodiac.

After lunch, the teachers and students performed thirteen distinctive programs which they carefully prepared beforehand. Mr. Yang of the Confucius Institute first introduced to the elderly the origin of Spring Festival and its customs, which aroused great interest of everyone present. Wonderful programs were performed one after another, including paper-cutting, Guzheng performance, French songs, folk dance, group practicing of Tai-chi, talk show in French, tea art, Chinese calligraphy, Hulusi solo and national costume show. Colorful programs greatly fascinated the elderly and won bursts of applause, which added to the lively atmosphere. During the show, the Confucius Institute also prepared a lucky draw and awarded the winners bookmarks, fans, Chinese knots, small accessories and panda dolls which are highly rich in Chinese elements. On that day, the journalist of Sud-Ouest of France interviewed the director of the Confucius Institute and the warden of the nursing home. A video reporter invited by the Confucius Institute recorded every memorable moment of the celebration activity.

After the marvelous show, the students joined the elderly; they talked warmly and took photos with each other. All was lost in the harmonious atmosphere. The Rochefort Lucille Garden Nursing Home also prepared an exquisite present to the Confucius Institute in return. When it was time to say good-bye, all were reluctant to part from each other. Through this celebration activity, the Confucius Institute in La Rochelle introduced cultural activities to the local community once again. It embodied the deep love of Chinese teachers and students for the French elderly and enhanced the Institute’s popularity and influence.
