Sponsored by the UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland (CII), the third Confucius Cup Table Tennis Tournament was held at the Dundrum Table Tennis Club on 23rd February. The tournament was contested by around 40 players from 8 countries, including China, the Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Hungary, Ireland, Poland and the United Kingdom.

The tournament was divided into men's and women's groups. In the women’s group, the 1st and 2nd prize went to Ms. Amanda Mogey from the United Kingdom and Ms. Marta Iareba from Poland. In the men’s group, Chinese table tennis player Mr. Na Ning won the first prize. Mr. Csaba Szollosi from Hungary, Mr. Luke Dempsey from Ireland and Mr. Tom David from Ireland claimed 2nd, 3rd, and 4th places respectively. Prof. Liming Wang, director of the UCD Confucius Institute, attended the event and presented the prizes to the winners.

The contestants demonstrated their strength and skills with countless tricky angles, carefully crafted fine arcs and amazing lightening smashes. The sports arena was filled with continuous cheers, applause and support from the excited crowd.

The Confucius Cup Table Tennis Tournament was set up with the purpose of enhancing relationships and friendship through exercise. Mr. Roman Pszonka, the organiser of this year’s tournament said: “Table tennis is getting very popular worldwide and is close to being the most played sport. It's also getting more popular in Ireland. I hope the table tennis tournament will interest more people in Chinese culture as many players in Ireland already know the names of top Chinese players and follow their matches.”
