“Happy Spring Festival, Best Wishes for the New Year of the Horse
– Chinese Culture Exhibition” Held by Confucius Institute at Angeles University Foundation in Angeles City, Philippines

At the end of lunar year and start of the New Year, the Year of the Horse was approaching. As the traditional Chinese festival – the Spring Festival was at hand, the Confucius Institute at Angeles University Foundation, under the eager expectation of the local people, held the annual “Happy Spring Festival – Chinese Culture Exhibition” in cooperation with the municipal government of Angeles City at SM-Clark, the city’s biggest shopping mall, on January 27, 2014. The guests who attended the opening ceremony included Mr. Emmanuel Y. Angeles, former Minister of Philippine Higher Education, and his wife, Mr. Edgardo Pamintuan, Mayor of Angeles City, and his wife, Ms. Maria Vicenta Vega-Cabigting, Vice Mayor of Angeles City, and Mr. Nepomuceno, representative of the Parliament.

Edgardo Pamintuan, Mayor of Angeles City, accompanied by Foreign and Chinese Directors of the Confucius Institute, attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony and experienced firsthand the cultural experience facilities and teaching materials equipped with talking pens which he highly praised.

During the Spring Festival every year, the Confucius Institute at Angeles University Foundation will hold the Chinese Culture Exhibition and Cultural Experience Activity at SM-Clark, which is greatly welcomed by the local people of Angeles City. This year the Confucius Institute, with the help of the SM-Clark Group Company, decorated the exhibition site to get a strong flavor of Chinese culture and a deep atmosphere of Chinese Spring Festival, which corresponded with the exhibition’s theme “Say Goodbye to the Old Year and Welcome the New Year, Best Wishes for the Year of the Horse”. On the first day of the exhibition, numerous people rushed to the scene and eagerly participated in this unique Chinese cultural experience activity. They were extremely interested in the exquisite exhibits with strong Chinese cultural flavor. What’s more, the performances of calligraphy writing and tea art given by volunteer Chinese language teachers of the Confucius Institute attracted many eyes. The visitors burst into cheers after viewing the unique artistic charm and profound cultural deposits of the traditional Chinese culture. An endless stream of people came forward to ask for works of calligraphy as souvenirs or to have a taste of the tea.

In addition, the Confucius Institute at Angeles University Foundation prepared specifically a brilliant photo exhibition for this activity. The photos were generally about contemporary landscapes around China and spectacles of major events in recent years, such as the Beijing Olympics, Shanghai Expo, and launch of the Shenzhou-10 spacecraft. The colorful photos attracted many people to stop and admire them.

Mr. Edgardo Pamintuan, Mayor of Angeles City, said that the series of Chinese cultural promotion activities held by the Confucius Institutes at Angeles University Foundation for the Philippine mainstream society were widely welcomed and praised by the local people. The municipal government of Angeles City fully recognized and highly supported all the work of the Confucius Institute. He also hoped that the Confucius Institute would hold more activities like this so as to let more local people understand better the Chinese culture. The Angeles City, he added, was willing to make contributions to the friendship between China and the Philippines.

Ms. Maria Vicenta Vega-Cabigting, Vice Mayor of Angeles City, expressed in an interview with the local media that over the four years since its establishment, the Confucius Institute at Angeles University Foundation had created successively some important brands such as “Model Program of Chinese Language Teaching” and “Confucius Institute Lectures in the National Library of the Philippines”, opened Chinese language courses for government departments of the Philippines such as the Vice Presidential Palace, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Immigration Office, and Customs Office, and thus made outstanding contributions to the friendship between China and the Philippines. She said: “The Confucius Institute at Angeles University Foundation has become a major force for promoting the Chinese language and culture in the mainstream society of the Philippines, which is demonstrated by the fact that it has twice been awarded the ‘Confucius Institute of the Year’ by the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban). The municipal government of Angeles City is glad to have such an excellent partner and the local people are proud to have such an outstanding Confucius Institute in their city.”

After the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan, together with the guests and volunteer teachers of the Confucius Institute, extended New Year greetings to the Chinese people all over the world. He hoped to send the Chinese people his warmest wishes through the platform of the Confucius Institute.

This activity will last for a week. On the day of New Year’s Eve, an Art Performance will be held by teachers and students of the Confucius Institute as well as the art troupe of Angeles University Foundation to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year together with the local people.
