The Opening Ceremony

With the approach of the Year of the Horse, good news was also frequently spread from Canada across the ocean. The Confucius Institute in Quebec held solemn opening ceremonies to celebrate the establishment of the two Confucius Classrooms at Cégep Limoilou and College Bourget on 22 and 30 January 2014 local time respectively.

Attendees of the ceremonies included Consul General Zhao Jiangping from the Chinese Consulate-General in Montreal, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Confucius Institute in Quebec Richard Filion, the Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute in Quebec Rong Meng, Head of the Asian Affairs Office of the Ministry of International Relations (Quebec) Mr LeBlanc, Chairman of the Union of Private Schools in Quebec, etc.

Consul General Zhao Jiangping, Mr Filion and the Presidents of the two institutions Mr. Grou and Mr. St-Jacque delivered warm speeches respectively. First of all, Mr Filion expressed his sincere gratitude to Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) for specific guidance and support to the Confucius Institute in Quebec and the establishment of the new Confucius Classrooms. He added that the establishment of the new Confucius Classrooms is of great significance in promoting Chinese culture in Canada, strengthening the interactions between both sides in terms of education and enhancing the friendship between the two peoples.

In his address, Consul General Zhao Jiangping also pointed out that, along with China's growing influence globally, Confucius Institutes have been spread all over the world, which is an important indicator for the enhancement of mutual understanding between China and people in the rest of the world. Learning Chinese is also very helpful for students to open their horizons and understand the world. What’s more, the friendship between our two peoples dates back to ancient times and the foundation of the two new Confucius Classrooms in Quebec is an important witness and a milestone for the profound friendship between the two sides.

In the opening ceremony, the Confucius Institute Headquarters presented the Cultural Item Package as the gift for the inauguration of Confucius Classrooms, and in return, the Canadian side gave the painting of the Canadian famous artist Joanne Gauthier. Moreover, the adorable pupils who were learning Chinese demonstrated lovely and joyous performances to celebrate the Chinese New Year, which won warm applause and praise from the audience.
