It was January of 2014 when the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics was about to start. Everyone at the Confucius Institute at Blagoveshchensk State Pedagogical University (Russia) was in high spirits because it was an important matter that Mr. Vasily Fedorovich, a third-year student at the Confucius Institute, was selected as a volunteer for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Since October 2013, Mr. Vasily Fedorovich was interviewed and reported by the City TV Station of Blagoveshchensk in the Armur Oblast, the Armur Oblast TV Station and Moscow TV Station, respectively. The directors, teachers and students from the Confucius Institute all offered their warm support and assistance for the interviews.

Mr. Vasily Fedorovich, as a retired teacher, was a ski coach for 30 years. He took part in the last Winter Olympics as a volunteer for the Russian delegation. In order to become a volunteer for the 2014 Winter Olympics, he, at the age of 65, came to the Confucius Institute to learn Chinese for three years. Each day, he spent more than five hours learning Chinese. He said that “I hope to make up for my old age by spending more time than others so that I could learn Chinese as fast and well as possible.” He had already succeeded in passing the Level Ⅱ and Level Ⅲ of the HSK Test.

In 2013, Mr. Vasily Fedorovich sent his application to the Chinese Olympic Committee with an earnest hope to become a volunteer for the Chinese delegation, so that he could offer his service and assistance in sports affairs, everyday life and legal consultations. In this way, he could make his own contributions to helping Chinese delegation achieve good results in this Winter Olympics. At the end of November 2013, Mr. Vasily Fedorovich received the notice that he would be a volunteer for the Winter Olympics and was invited to join in the training programs in Moscow at the Training Center for Volunteers of the Winter Olympics.

Becoming a volunteer for Chinese delegation at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics is always Vasily’s dream. At the same time, he represented the good wishes of all the students from the Confucius Institute at Blagoveshchensk State Pedagogical University that both Chinese delegation and Russian delegation could achieve good results and obtain success.
