Confucius Institute at Kathmandu University of Nepal Welcomed the Year of the Horse with Songs and Dances

On January 26, 2014, a Chinese Spring Festival Celebration with the theme of “Year of the Horse, Harmonious Relation” sponsored by the Confucius Institute at the Kathmandu University of Nepal was held at the auditorium of Kathmandu University. On this very day, the auditorium was redecorated by teachers and students of the Confucius Institute with red lanterns, strings of firecrackers, and brand-new spring couplets which emitted a very strong Chinese flavor and let Nepali friends feel the joy of the Spring Festival in advance.

The big auditorium was packed. A total of over 200 persons attended the celebration, including His Excellency Wu Chuntai, Chinese Ambassador to Nepal, Mr. Shrestha, Vice-Chancellor of Kathmandu University, Mr. Narayan Gopal Malego, Secretary of the Ministry of Education for Nepal, representatives of Chinese-funded organizations, faculty and students of Kathmandu University, and other Nepali friends. At the celebration, Ambassador Wu Chuntai sent his sincere wishes for the New Year and said that the friendship between China and Nepal was taken successfully to a new level in the past year. He added that since its founding in 2007, the Confucius Institute at Kathmandu University had made contributions to helping Nepali people understand the Chinese culture and enhancing the friendship between China and Nepal.

The performances at the celebration were rich and colorful. Dances Flavor of Western Regions and Ri San Fi Li Li excited the audience, the Huangmei Opera The Emperor’s Female Son-in-law and the Chinese martial arts imbued with supreme heroism pushed the atmosphere of the celebration to a climax, songs such as Happy Hometown, You Exist in My Song, Our Nepal, Beijing Welcomes You brought bursts of applause, and the poetry reading Farewell Cambridge and the sign language dance Grateful Heart deeply moved the audience.

The Confucius Institute at Kathmandu University has consecutively held six Spring Festival celebrations, which provided a platform for Nepali friends to experience in person the culture of Chinese Spring Festival.
