As the year of the snake is closing and the new year of the horse is approaching, on the occasion of the Lunar New Year of the Horse, I, on behalf of Confucius Institute Headquarters/Hanban, would like to extend my sincere respect and New Year greetings to Chinese language teachers and volunteers dispatched to teach abroad and living far away from their motherland and relatives, and to teachers and students of Confucius Institutes all over the world.

In the past year, under the joint efforts of Chinese and foreign parties, Confucius Institutes and the international Chinese language education continued to flourish. With the full implementation of the Confucius Institute development plan, the quality and level of the Institutes were improved continuously. The teachers and volunteers deeply love their work and are devoted to it. Through quiet diligence and sincere dedication, they have made great contributions to meet the need of people around the world for learning Chinese and enhancing the understanding and friendship between Chinese people and foreigners. I hereby would like to express my heartfelt thanks to friends and colleagues who have made contributions to the development and construction of Confucius Institutes.

“Make still further progress.” The Decision of the Communist Party of China’s Third Plenary Session of the Eighteenth Central Committee issued a mobilization order of comprehensively deepening reform, which gave new impetus to the development of Confucius Institutes. The year of 2014 marks the tenth anniversary of the first Confucius Institute. Let’s work together and make arduous efforts to write a new chapter for Confucius Institutes and the international Chinese language education.

I would like to wish everyone happy holidays, good health, successful career and family happiness!

Xu Lin

Director-General of Hanban

Chief Executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters
