Zhang Xiaozhen met with her daughter “unexpectedly”

The opening ceremony of “the 2nd Brilliance of China-People of the Year for the Dissemination of Chinese Culture” sponsored by China’s Ministry of Culture, Information Office of the State Council, Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, Confucius Institute Headquarters/Hanban and CCTV was held solemnly in Beijing on 20 December 2013.

The 10 individual winners and the one collective winner awarded with the honor of the 2013 People of the Year for the Dissemination of Chinese Culture come from the five continents of the world, representing different cultural backgrounds. Each of the winners is the typical figure promoting the dissemination of Chinese culture to the whole world, for instance, the individual winners such as the Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania Zhang Xiaozhen,Head of the Buddha's Light International Association Master Hsing Yun, the internationally renowned film star Jackie Chan, American famous Chinese cuisine TV show host Martin Yan, Academician of the Royal Society of Canada and sinologist Ye Jiaying, social activist and famous female painter Gao Chunfang, famous Chinese social activist and prestigious literati Yang Xuelan, Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of Yangon Oriental Language and Commercial Center Zeng Yuanxiang, Director of Costa Rica Overseas Chinese Association Weng Cuiyu, Chairman of the Federation of Chinese Medicine & Acupuncture Societies of Australia Lin Ziqiang, and the collective winner Mei Lanfang Peking Opera Troupe from the Beijing Opera House.

At the awarding ceremony, the People of the Year Zhang Xiaozhen, the Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, received special attention from the audience. The former Prime Minister of Tanzania Frederick Tluway Sumaye gave a touching addressing speech at the ceremony as the guest referee for Zhang Xiaozhen, who went to Africa twice and spent 7 years there to spare no efforts in the promotion of Chinese teaching and the dissemination of Chinese culture. The Chief Executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters and Director-General of Hanban Ms. Xu Lin gave a warm hug to Zhang Xiaozhen and awarded this excellent Chinese teacher. The audience at the site were also touched deeply and applauded again and again when Zhang Xiaozhen, “the Chinese Mother” in the eyes of her African students, met with her own daughter unexpectedly at the ceremony after such a long separation.

This grand cultural event was also a magnificent gathering for the Chinese cultural elites throughout the world. The ceremony was featured with the session of addresses from the referees. A Number of distinguished political figures and celebrities attended this awarding ceremony as referees, such as the former President of Costa Rica Jose Maria Figueres, the former Prime Minister of Tanzania, Speaker for the House of Representatives in the State of Victoria Kenneth Smith, the Vice Councilor of News and Culture of the American Embassy in China Lisa K.Heller, the famous Canadian Sinologist Jan Wilson Walls, which also exhibited the international influence of this awarding activity and the global influence of Chinese culture.

As a large-scale activity for selecting and awarding cultural figures, “The Brilliance of China - People of the Year for the Dissemination of Chinese Culture” aims to praise the overseas Chinese, foreign friends and well-known figures from all walks of life in China who have made significant contributions to the dissemination of Chinese culture, expanding the broadness and increasing the speed of disseminating Chinese culture, and also enhance the national cultural soft power as well as the international influence.

Once annually, this activity has been successfully held twice up till now. The awarding ceremony will be on air on CCTV Channel 4 at 19:00 on 3 January 2014 and re-broadcasted on CCTV Channel 1 at 22:30 on 7 January 2014.
