On the afternoon of November 25, 2013, Mulatu Teshome, President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, warmly received the delegation led by Xu Lin, Chief Executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters and Director-General of Hanban, at the presidential palace.

Director-General Xu Lin first warmly congratulated Dr. Mulatu on his election as President of Ethiopia. She said that Chinese people feel proud and happy for their old friend His Excellency President Mulatu. With the joint efforts of China and Ethiopia, the Addis Ababa Confucius Institute has been developing soundly. Twenty teachers and volunteers sent by China have provided Chinese language courses and professional training for students of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Ethiopia, and meanwhile have set up a Chinese major at the Addis Ababa University, Mekelle University, etc. She also expressed her belief that under the leadership of His Excellency President Mulatu, the educational exchange between China and Ethiopia in the future will be raised to a higher level.

President Mulatu extended his welcome to the delegation of Hanban and recalled with pleasure his experience of studying in China twenty years ago as well as his participation in the World Chinese Conference in 2005. He said that in recent years the friendship between Ethiopia and China has been developing rapidly, and the economic and trade exchanges between the two countries have become increasingly frequent. More and more Chinese enterprises come to invest in Ethiopia, which provide job opportunities for Ethiopian youth. Thus it is very important for young people in Ethiopia to master both the Chinese language and professional skills. After the establishment of the Addis Ababa Confucius Institute, Hanban assisted Tianjin University of Technology and Education in sending out a group of teachers of Chinese language and professional skills to cultivate for TVET a large number of talents with high Chinese proficiency and professional skills, which laid a solid foundation for the friendly exchanges between Ethiopia and China. President Mulatu also expressed that since he studied in China for many years, he really wants to promote the cooperation between the two countries in the field of education. On the one hand, he hopes that more Ethiopian young people will go to China to study the Chinese language and such majors as agriculture, science and technology, and architecture, so as to serve the national construction after returning to Ethiopia. On the other hand, he wishes that China could offer more teachers of various majors to help Ethiopian youth study Chinese and other professional skills.

Director-General Xu Lin said that the experience of President Mulatu sets a good example for Ethiopian youth and will surely encourage more Ethiopian young people to study in China. She also mentioned that on the morning of this day when Vice Premier Liu Yandong visited the Addis Ababa Confucius Institute, she announced that 100 Confucius Institute Scholarship places for studying and a quota of 100 students for participating in the 2014 summer camp in China will be provided to Ethiopia. Madam Xu then added that Confucius Institute Headquarters will carry out in earnest the follow-up work and help Ethiopia train more talents in Chinese language and other fields. Meanwhile, it will further explore the possibility of cooperating with colleges in Ethiopia to train local teachers.

Ma Jianfei, Deputy Chief Executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters, and Liu Xin, President of Tianjin University of Technology and Education, were present as well.
