WASHINGTON D.C., Nov. 20 (By Wang Fengfeng from Xinhua) - At the opening ceremony of the Confucius Institute US Center held by Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban), Liu Yandong, Vice Premier of China’s State Council, who was visiting the US, inaugurated the Center and Yuan Guiren, Chinese Minister of Education, delivered a speech.

Yuan Guiren said that with the continuous deepening of exchanges between China and other countries in such fields as politics, economy, culture and education, people all over the world pay more and more attention to China, and the “Chinese Language Craze” is now sweeping across the whole world. Of over 430 Confucius Institutes and 640 Confucius Classrooms co-operated by China and their host schools, 98 Confucius Institutes and more than 350 Confucius Classrooms are located in the US. They effectively help in promoting people-to-people communication and cooperation between China and the US and thus enjoy popularity in their host schools and local communities.

Yuan Guiren further pointed out that with the rapid development of Confucius Institutes and Classrooms, their host universities as well as elementary and secondary schools have demanded more high-quality services of Hanban. The Center aims to ameliorate the services of Hanban to the Confucius Institutes in the US, introduce Confucius Institutes to the American people in an open and transparent way and promote resource sharing and information exchanges among Confucius Institutes and Classrooms in the US. In collaboration with other sections of the American society, the Center will commit itself to improving and popularizing Chinese language teaching in the US, and therefore broadening and enhancing people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.

Steven Knapp, Council Member of Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) and President of the George Washington University, said in his remarks that the booming Confucius Institutes have provided students and teachers in the US with a precious platform for educational exchanges and also contributed much to cultural and language communication between the two countries. He said that it is hard to imagine a better way to promote cultural exchanges between China and the US, and the establishment of the Center in Washington D.C. can provide not only convenience for all host universities or universities that cooperate with Confucius Institutes but also necessary assistance for American people to help them understand Confucius Institutes.

According to the Confucius Institute US Center, it serves as an open and reliable information source of Confucius Institutes’ purposes and activities for US officials, a collaborator with US media and society, an assistant to help the pubic gain a better understanding of Confucius Institutes, a promoter of exchanges and cooperation among Confucius Institutes in the US and a provider of various services and assessment.
