Xinhua Washington, November 20, 2013 (By Wang Fengfeng) On November 20, 2013, the inauguration ceremony of the Confucius Institute U.S. Center was held by Confucius Institute Headquarters in Washington, capital of the United States. Liu Yandong, Vice Premier of the State Council of China, who was visiting the United States, inaugurated the Center and Yuan Guiren, Minister of Education of China, delivered a speech.

Yuan Guiren said in his speech that as the communication between China and the rest of the world in the field of politics, economy, culture, and education deepens, people all over the world are paying more and more attention to China and the global yearning to learn Chinese has experienced rapid growth. So far China, in cooperation with schools and universities of other countries, has established over 430 Confucius Institutes in universities and 640 Confucius Classrooms in primary and secondary schools around the world. The United States, with 98 Confucius Institutes and 350 Confucius Classrooms, has the largest number of Confucius Institutes and Confucius Classrooms, which have effectively promoted the cultural exchanges and cooperation between China and the United States and have been broadly welcomed by universities and communities where they are located.

However, the rapid growth of Confucius Institutes and Confucius Classrooms means that the schools and universities hosting the Institutions are demanding higher quality service from Hanban, said Yuan Guiren, adding that the establishment of a regional center in the United States is intended to improve the service provided by Confucius Institute Headquarters for the Institutions. It can also offer the U.S. public an open and transparent channel to learn about Confucius Institutes, facilitate the source sharing and information exchange among various Confucius Institutions and Classrooms in the United States, raise the Chinese language teaching quality and promotion level in the United States through cooperation with all sectors of the American society, and promote broad and in-depth cultural exchanges between China and the United States.

Steven Knapp, council member of Confucius Institute Headquarters and president of the George Washington University, remarked in his speech that the rapidly developing Confucius Institutes have provided an invaluable platform of education and exchange for students and teachers across the United States and have contributed a lot to the cultural and language exchanges between the two countries. He said it is hard for him to imagine another way which may better promote the cultural exchanges between the two countries, and the establishment of the Confucius Institute U.S. Center in Washington will provide assistance to all universities hosting Confucius Institutes or having partnership with them and help the U.S. public understand the Institutes.

According to the information provided by the Confucius Institute U.S. Center, the major tasks of the Center include providing open and reliable information and resources for American authorities to understand its purposes and activities, carrying out communication and cooperation with the U.S. media and society, enhancing the public’s understanding of Confucius Institutes, facilitating the exchange and cooperation among Confucius Institutes in the United States, providing various services and evaluations, and so on.
