Liu Yandong Visits the Addis Ababa Confucius Institute in Ethiopia

On the morning of November 25, Vice Premier of the State Council of China Liu Yandong, who was visiting Ethiopia, paid a visit to the Addis Ababa Confucius Institute. During this one-hour visit, Vice Premier Liu first went to the photo exhibit of the Confucius Institute and watched the Chinese language class before attending and addressing the welcome ceremony.

At 9:50 a.m., Vice Premier Liu Yandong was warmly greeted at the Addis Ababa Confucius Institute by around one hundred Ethiopian students of the Institute waving Chinese and Ethiopian flags. In company with Ethiopian State Minister for Higher Education Kaba, President of Ethiopian Technical and Vocational Education and Training College Kebede and Chief Executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters and Director-General of Hanban Xu Lin, Vice Premier Liu Yandong shook hands with the welcoming crowd.

After her visit to the photo exhibit of achievements in Chinese teaching and cultural activities of the Confucius Institute, Vice Premier Liu Yandong went to the language laboratory of the Confucius Institute to watch the Chinese language class. She amiably interacted with the students and sent each and every one of them a compact dictionary of Essential Chinese Dictionary as a gift.

Later, Vice Premier Liu Yandong watched the spectacular shows performed by the students of the Confucius Institute such as Chinese martial arts performance Zhongguo Gongfu (Chinese Gongfu (Kungfu)), Henan Opera Shei Shuo Nuzi Buru Nan (Who Says Women Are Inferior to Men), a chorus of Mingtian Hui Genghao (Tomorrow Will Be Better), and so forth. At the welcome ceremony, Vice Premier Liu remarked that China and Ethiopia enjoy profound traditional friendship. Mulatu Teshome, President of Ethiopia, who has ever studied in China for 15 years, has fond feelings for China. She hoped that more Ethiopian young people, following his example, will like Chinese and understand Chinese culture. She also encouraged the teachers and volunteers at the Confucius Institute to work hard on popularizing Chinese language and culture. In the end, Vice Premier Liu granted to Ethiopia 100 Confucius Institute Scholarship places and a quota of 100 students participating in the 2014 “Chinese Bridge” Summer Camp. Liu Yandong’s remarks and gifts have greatly inspired Ethiopian young people, arousing their interest in Chinese culture and boosting their confidence in studying Chinese. The visit concluded in a warm atmosphere.
