From June 10 to June 14, 2013, the first local teachers’ training class in Switzerland was held by the Confucius Institute at the University of Geneva. The training lasted for five days and was attended by a total of 42 teachers who were engaged in practical teaching. Most of them came from cities of Switzerland, such as Geneva, Zurich and Lausanne, and some from France or Germany.

The training has received vigorous support from Hanban, which sent Professor Li Quan of Renmin University of China and Professor Zhou Xiaobing of Sun Yat-Sen University to the Confucius Institute for giving lectures. In addition, the Confucius Institute invited Professor Sun Dejin of Beijing Language and Culture University, Professor Yang Zhitang of INALCO (Institut National Des Langues Et Civilisation Orientales) and Miss Ariane Lin Dejean of Ecole Alsacienne High School in France to serve as teachers. Those experts from China and local communities gave wonderful lectures on many topics, including how to teach Chinese characters, pedagogy, integrated teaching, teaching of function words, textbook analysis, grammar teaching, Chinese language teaching in high schools, and grammar teaching for students who speak French. In an easy-to-understand manner, the experts made both theoretical and case studies, and introduced both cutting-edge problems and related fundamental ones in Chinese teaching. Participants of the training responded excitedly to the experts’ lectures, and actively exchanged views with the teachers on the class or during the break

The Confucius Institute at the University of Geneva was founded in November 2011 and is currently the only Confucius Institute in Switzerland. Local teachers have great hopes for it, because many of them do not have a professional background of Chinese teaching, and they regard the Confucius Institute as the authority of Chinese teaching. They were very grateful to the Institute for organizing this local teachers’ training class. The teachers said that they learned a lot through this training and it met their need to improve teaching skills, and they hoped that the Institute will continue to hold this kind of training next year.
