China and the Ocean: A Lecture at the Confucius Institute, University of Poitiers, France

The Confucius Institute at University of Poitiers in France held a lecture entitled China and the Ocean on 13th June 2013. The keynote speaker Mr. Hugues Eudeline is a historian and an expert on oceanography. He first introduced the geography of world oceans, then discussed that of the Chinese oceans, and covered topics ranging from Chinese historical seaborne trade, through overseas foreign contacts, modern exploitation of ocean resources, building of a modern navy, to major Chinese ports and logistics of commercial exchange between Chinese and international ports. Mr. Hugues Eudeline devoted much attention to the Seven Journeys of Ming Dynasty navigator Zheng He. He also talked about the importance of ocean resources for the planet and discussed how to protect and make better use of them.

The audience responded with thunderous applause for Mr. Hugues Eudeline’s informative, vivid and fascinating lecture.
