BOWLING GREEN, Sept. 28 (Xinhua News Agency, xinhuanet) (Reporter Zhang Baoping) The opening ceremony of the 1st Joint Meeting of the United States Confucius Institutes was held at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, the 3rd biggest city in Kentucky. Xu Lin, Chief Executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters and Director-General of Hanban, attended and addressed the ceremony.

Xu Lin said, Kentucky is the birthplace of former President Lincoln and the home of KFC, and its bilateral trade with China has been expanding over these years. Chinese teaching is popular among the locals, and thus the establishment of Confucius Institutes is ideally timed to meet their needs. She further pointed out that the Chinese government always places a premium on the relations between China and the US and fully supports the development of Confucius Institutes, the ones in the US in particular.

At the ceremony, Xu Lin also gave an introduction to the recent development of Confucius Institutes. She said that thus far, with more than 700,000 registered students, a total of over 430 Confucius Institutes and over 650 Confucius Classrooms have been opened in 117 countries and regions across the world, and the US alone has had 97 Confucius Institutes and 400 Confucius Classrooms in elementary and high schools, making it the home to the most Confucius Institutes in the world.

Earlier that day, the conference representatives visited the Confucius Institute at Western Kentucky University and the Chinese-teaching touring bus.

The two-day Joint Meeting of the United States Confucius Institutes has attracted more than 260 attendees, including the Chinese and American directors of over 90 Confucius Institutes and those in charge of the Confucius Classrooms in elementary and high schools in the US. The discussions at the meeting will revolve around such issues as the selection and employment of core teachers, the training of local teachers and the cooperation on the opening of pedagogical majors in Chinese language teaching, the establishment of the Chinese major for undergraduate students, the implementation of Confucius China Study Plan and so forth.
