Chinese President Xi Jinping and Uzbek President Karimov Attended the Signing Ceremony of the Establishment of the Confucius Institute in Samarkand Jointly Run by Confucius Institute Headquarters and Uzbek Ministry of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education

On September 9, 2013, in the presence of both Chinese President Xi Jinping and Uzbek President Karimov, Madam Xu Lin, Chief Executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters and Director-General of Hanban, signed the Agreement on the Establishment of the Confucius Institute in Samarkand between Confucius Institute Headquarters(Hanban)of the People’s Republic of China and Ministry of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan with Komilov, Uzbek Minister of Foreign Affairs.

It has been stated in the Joint Declaration on the Further Development and Deepening of the Bilateral Strategic Partnership between the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Uzbekistan issued on the same day that both sides are ready to enhance and expand the cooperation in such fields as science and technology, culture and humanities, particularly science, education, sports and tourism. They have also decided to open a Confucius Institute in Samarkand.

On September 10, 2013, Madam Xu Lin had talks with the President of Samarkand State Institute of Foreign Languages S. S. Sirojiddinov to set in motion the establishment of the Confucius Institute in Samarkand. She then paid a visit to the site prepared for the future Confucius Institute, and inaugurated the Confucius Institute in Samarkand along with Mr. Cao Deming, President of the Chinese partner--Shanghai International Studies University.
