Phnom Penh, May 29th-31st - Representatives from 90 Confucius Institutes in 31 countries and regions in Asia will arrive in Phnom Penh for the 2013 Joint Conference of Confucius Institutes in Asia for the purpose of exchanging regional teaching achievements, sharing the cultures of Asian countries, inheriting and carrying forward Chinese culture, and discussing the sustainable development of Confucius Institutes.

Xu Lin, Counselor of the State Council, Director-General of Hanban and Chief Executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters, held a press briefing at the InterContinental Phnom Penh Hotel before the conference to introduce the status of the Confucius Institutes. She said, representatives from Confucius Institutes in 90 regions in 31 countries have gathered to promote the sustainable development of Confucius Institutes in Asia and to promote cultural exchanges, among other purposes.

Xu Lin said three topics will be discussed at the conference. First, to discuss the development of the next 3-year development plan and the 2020 medium-term development plan; second, to discuss the future strengthening of training for local teachers and expanding the compilation of local teaching materials; third, as 2014 will be the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Confucius Institutes, to discuss the preparations of various activities to celebrate the anniversary so as to expand the influence of the Confucius Institute in the country where it is located.

Xu Lin spoke highly of the Confucius Institute at Royal Academy of Cambodia for its gratifying achievements. She expressed her hope that Confucius Institutes in Asia will find a new path by learning from the successful operation of the Confucius Institute in Cambodia. Since the Confucius Institute of the Royal Academy of Cambodia was founded in 2009, it has been warmly welcomed by the Chinese and overseas Chinese there. It has been recognized and supported by the Cambodian government, and it has spread Chinese language all over Cambodia with the cooperation with local universities and colleges. In Cambodia, there are more than 6,800 registered students learning not only on campus of the Royal Academy of Cambodia but also in more than 10 locations including the Premier House and the Guard Command, etc.

Xu Lin mentioned that Confucius Institutes are committed to helping local people learn Chinese and understanding Chinese culture, strengthening the cultural exchanges and cooperation between China and different countries, and promoting friendship and amicable relations between China and her neighboring countries. She said she believes that the non-profit Confucius Institutes will continue to serve as a brand and platform in the field of educational and cultural exchanges, maintain and develop friendship between people, and deepen connections and mutual understanding between people.

The Confucius Institute in Cambodia has been awarded the title of “Confucius Institute of the Year”, and this is the reason why the Confucius Institute Headquarters choose Cambodia for the annual conference in Asia. It is hoped that the Confucius Institutes in Asia can learn from the Confucius Institute in Cambodia. The Joint Conference of Confucius Institutes in Asia was opened yesterday (the 29th) afternoon at the Peace Palace. Prime Minister Hun Sen attended the opening ceremony. It will further promote the unique role played by Confucius Institutes in enhancing cultural exchanges and cooperative relations between China and Cambodia.
