March 28th, 2013 - Chinese President Xi Jinping and President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma, witnessed the Signing Ceremony of the Confucius Institute at the Durban University of Technology, South Africa.


March 27th, 2013 - The Confucius Institute at the Durban University of Technology, South Africa held the grand unveiling ceremony. The picture shows Xu Lin, Chief Executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters and Director-General of Hanban, and Ahmed C. Bawa, Vice-Chancellor and Principal at the Durban University of Technology, South Africa, jointly unveiling the plaque for the Confucius Institute.


Ye Huiling, Secretary of Communist Party of China (CPC) Committee of Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University, the Chinese partner of the Confucius Institute at the Durban University of Technology, and Vice-Chancellor and Principal Ahmed C. Bawa signed the implementation agreement for the cooperative establishment of the Confucius Institute.

On March 26, 2013, in the presence of Chinese President Xi Jinping and President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma, Xu Lin, Chief Executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters and Director-General of Hanban, and Ahmed C. Bawa, Vice-Chancellor and Principal at the Durban University of Technology, South Africa signed the agreement for the cooperative establishment of the Confucius Institute at the Durban University of Technology in Pretoria, capital of South Africa. It is the first Confucius Institute whose signing was witnessed by the new Chinese President during his first diplomatic visit, and the first Confucius Institute in KwaZulu-Natal Province, the hometown of President Zuma. The “Joint Communiqué Between the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of South Africa” released on the same day states that China welcomes and supports South Africa to establish more Confucius Institutes and strengthen Chinese language training in South Africa.

On March 27, the grand ceremony was held at Ritson Campus, the Durban University of Technology. Secretary of CPC Committee of Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University Ye Huiling and Vice-Chancellor and Principal Ahmed C. Bawa signed the implementation agreement for the cooperative establishment of the Confucius Institute at the Durban University of Technology. Chief Executive Xu Lin and the representatives from South Africa jointly unveiled the plaque for the Confucius Institute.
