Presbyterian College hosted the annual Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) Chinese Language Proficiency Test and the Youth Chinese Test (YCT) on Saturday March 23. Over 75 students from across the state of South Carolina came that morning to demonstrate their ability to speak and understand Mandarin Chinese.

PC is one of the few testing locations in the Southern United States, so students from such institutions as the College of Charleston, Furman University, and Bob Jones University were willing to visit our campus for the chance to prove themselves.

The students took on the whole range of proficiency level tests. The YCT test takers ranged from Level 1 to Level 4 (out of four levels). HSK testers ranged from Level 1 to Level 5 (of six). One Level 5 tester, from Furman College, spoke with Confucius Institute staff in fluent Chinese and we are certain that he met the criteria for knowing 2,500 words in this foreign language!

Language testing was even larger this year than previously, indicative of the growing recognition of the importance of being able to speak Chinese in the modern world. We would like to thank everyone who participated in the testing this year, and we invite everyone who has not already done so to apply for Chinese courses in the fall!
