In February 2013, after performing in Paris, 4 artists from Yangzhou Municipal Puppet Troupe arrived in Poitiers, the famous University City in France, and gave three shows organized by the Confucius Institute, which were a great success. As a professional art performance troupe renowned at home and abroad, the Yangzhou Municipal Puppet Troupe from Jiangsu Province has traveled around more than 40 countries in the world so far. They have spread the Yangzhou Puppet Show, a kind of traditional Chinese folk art far and wide. The puppet shows performed by Yangzhou Puppet Troupe are the perfect combination of tradition and modern. To make it more suitable for being performed overseas, the shows were specially modified. What we see now are the performances with people and puppets appearing on the stage at the same time, which better transmits the traditional culture and integrates with western culture.

The first show given in Poitiers took place at the Providence Junior High School, which is a teaching site of the Confucius Institute and offers Chinese courses and Chinese language experience courses. More than one hundred students learn Chinese and learn about Chinese culture at this teaching school. It was the first time that the students had seen the traditional Chinese puppet show. It is totally different from French ones. During the entire show, what conveyed information were the movements and dances of performances as well as the music. Over one hundred and fifty students enjoyed the show with great interest, and laughter was heard endlessly.

The last show took place at Renaudot Kindergarten. In China, puppet shows are designed for children as well. With the funny movements, the vivid performance, and the cultural background of each performance specially explained by Chen Mengwen, the Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute, the children enjoyed the show very much. After the artists finished the performance, the excited children gathered around the artists. They embraced the artists, expressing thanks in their own way.
