BEIJING, Dec. 16 (Xinhuanet) – On the evening of 16 December, the opening ceremony of the 7th Confucius Institute Conference was held at the China National Convention Center. Mdm. Liu Yandong, State Councilor of P.R. China and Chair of the Council of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, attended and delivered a speech at the ceremony, and gave prizes to advanced individuals and institutes among Confucius Institutes worldwide.

Liu Yandong pointed out that international promotions of the Chinese language have seen new developments in 2012, by now with 400 Confucius Institutes founded, more than 500 Confucius Classrooms established, and 650,000 students registered. These international promotions have opened a window for people of all countries to understand Chinese culture and modern China, and have played an important role in communicating friendship between people and promoting exchange and mutual learning between different cultures. Liu Yandong emphasized that the main spirit of the 18th CPC National Congress stands for peace, development, collaboration, win-win strategies, respecting the diversity of human civilization, and diversified development. The Chinese government will actively support the steady development of the Confucius Institute.

Liu Yandong pointed out that the theme of this conference, “To Facilitate the Integration of the Confucius Institute into the University and Local Community”, is very significant. She hoped that Confucius Institutes would adapt to local culture and traditions, mindsets, and student characteristics, work hard on enhancing the level of teachers, teaching materials, and teaching methods, stimulate students’ learning interest, and improve teaching quality. By fully playing out their role as a comprehensive cultural exchange platform, Confucius Institutes could enhance their appeal and plant the foundation for Chinese-foreign friendship. With expanding teaching space and enriching teaching contents, Confucius Institutes could extend from large cities to other areas, from campuses to communities, and become more responsive for the need of universities and communities. Liu Yandong also hoped that Confucius Institutes would continue to utilize government support, community involvement, and civilian promotion, merge with the national education system of their host countries, unite with future career developments of students, and achieve shared construction, management, and rewards between Chinese and foreign sides.

More than 2,000 university presidents and representatives from Confucius Institutes from 108 countries and regions attended the conference.
