“China Festival”of the First Confucius Classroom in Turkey

On November 16, 2012, Jale Tezer College, the first Confucius Classroom in Turkey, proudly started the "China Festival" activity with the support of the Confucius Institute at Middle East Technical University (METU).

Located in the downtown of the capital city, Ankara, Jale Tezer College , established in 1998, has more than 800 students, almost half of whom are studying Chinese.

The confucius classroon in Jale Tezer College, the first one of the kind in Turkey, was established in September 2010 with the support of the Confucius Institute at METU, and Since 2011 Confucius Institute has maintained a good cooperation with the college by sending a teacher to help both in teaching and in organizing cultural activities, which enhanced the influence of the Confucius Classroom.

The "China Festival" program consisted of China Day cultural experience activities, students’ Chinese singing performances, fashion show, photo exhibition of “2012 Chinese Bridge Summer Camp and Turkish Education Delegation in China" , and students’ project Exhibition.

At the beginning of the program, the Chinese traditional music cheered the whole audience. A group of students in Chinese traditional clothes - cheongsam, costume, Tai Chi wear walked into the auditorium and showed on the stage, saying “Nihao” and “Huanying” to the audience, and warm applauses burst from the crowd. The following Chinese song chorus, the Chinese knowledge quiz and other programs attracted a large number of children to participate in.

In the afternoon, the cultural experience activities included learning how to make Chinese knot, how to write Chinese characters with brush, how to use chopsticks, how to play shuttlecock and other activities. Students were engaged in these activities joyfully. Deniz, a 9-year-old boy said his favorite activity was Chinese shuttlecock. He was proud of his rapid progress for kicking the shuttlecock from once to 7 times.

The students’ project covered various topics of China, e.g. Chinese cities, Chinese clothing, Chinese cuisine, Chinese martial arts, sports, Chinese paper cutting, Chinese tourism and architeture. They expressed their undersanding and appreciation with pictures, colorful paper, photographs, handmade works and Chinese characters.

Five students who visited China were very happy to find their own pictures on the Great Wall in the photo exhibition. The students’ projects and summer camp photo exhibition will last one week.

Reporters from Xinhua News Agency recorded students’ performance, their acticities and interviewed Bahar, the principal of Jale Tezer College. Ms. Bahar showed gratitude to the Confucius Institute at METU and hoped Jale Tezer College to be the cradle of cultivating talents for Sino-Turkey cooperation and diplomacy.

Shanping Wang, director of the Confucius Institute said they would have more cooperation with middle schools in Ankara and gradually establish more Confucius Classrooms in the years to come.
