Confucius Institute in Jamaica Holds the Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration and Establishment Ceremony for Confucius Classroom

On the evening of September 28, 2012, the Confucius Institute at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus organized the Mid-Autumn Festival celebration and establishment ceremony for the Confucius Classroom. Chinese Ambassador Zheng Qingdian from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Jamaica, Principal Gordon Shirley of the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, Jamaica, Principal and student representatives of Ardenne High School as well as the teacher and student representatives of Campion Middle School were invited to attend the event. Representatives of Jamaica - China Friendship Association, Chinese Association of Jamaica, and Chinese Benevolent Association, as well as teachers and students of the Confucius Institute also participated in the event.

Ambassador Zheng Qingdian, Principal Gordon Shirley, and Ms. Nadine Molloy, Principal of Ardenne High School delivered speeches at the meeting. In their speech, they all spoke highly of the Confucius Institute’s contributions to vitalizing the academic and cultural atmosphere at the university, enriching the spiritual life of the local people, and the friendly exchanges between Chinese and Jamaican peoples since its foundation, and congratulated the Confucius Institute on the establishment of two Confucius Classrooms in two secondary schools. In addition, they extended their sincere greetings and best wishes to all those present for the Mid-Autumn Festival, and they hoped that the Confucius Institute could make further contributions to the university’s cultural construction as well as the friendship and understanding between China and Jamaica.

Dr. Ramsay, Head of the Modern Language and Literature Department at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, where the Confucius Institute is located, mentioned in his speech that in the first semester of 2012-2013 academic year, the number of students and community members enrolled for learning Chinese was more than one hundred, which was more than twice the number of the previous semester. In addition, immediately after the establishment of Confucius Classrooms in two local secondary schools, the number of students registering for learning Chinese reached nearly 200. Moreover, there were two universities that had submitted the letter of intent to the Confucius Institute for the purpose of offering Chinese language courses in their universities.

After that, the students of Confucius Institute sang Chinese songs, played the cello and gave other wonderful performances to push the atmosphere to an exciting climax.

After the event, the Confucius Institute prepared sumptuous Chinese cuisines as well as moon cakes for the traditional Chinese festival. Everyone tasted the delicacies while enjoying the moonlight to celebrate this traditional Chinese festival and the establishment of Ardenne and Campion Confucius Classrooms.
