2012 Pre-Service Training Workshop for Chinese Directors of Confucius Institutes Held in Headquarters

“This training is an unforgettable experience in my life”. The words from Wu Yanjun, who will report for duty in the Confucius Institute at Western Kentucky University, truly represented the feeling of the rest of over 100 trainees at the closing ceremony for 2012 Pre-Service Training Workshop for Chinese Directors of Confucius Institutes. From August 10 to September 3, 137 Chinese directors of the Confucius Institutes from 85 universities such as Peking University and Tsinghua University attended the pre-service training workshop organized by Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters and hosted by Dalian University of Foreign Languages. After the training, trainees will report for duty in their respective Confucius Institutes in 56 countries.

Xu Lin, Director-General of Hanban and Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, attended the closing ceremony and delivered a speech. She introduced the current development of the Confucius Institutes and the historical opportunities faced by the Confucius Institutes as well as the future development goals to the directors of the Confucius Institutes. She hoped that directors of the Confucius Institutes could grasp the historical opportunities, fulfill the duties and write a splendid chapter in the cause of promoting Chinese learning in the world and Sino-foreign educational and cultural exchanges.

During this nearly one-month intensive training, the host organization arranged training activities such as understanding of the Confucius Institute, the role of Chinese director in the Confucius Institute, Chinese language teaching, cultural activities and budget planning and settlement. In addition, traditional Chinese cultural training activities were provided such as Chinese shadow boxing, Chinese calligraphy, ethnic dance and handcraft. The training activities were diversified, including military training, expert workshop, group discussion, assignment and Chinese talent & skill training. Trainers included former directors of the Confucius Institutes, the divisional directors of headquarters, presidents of foreign universities and senior experts in Chinese diplomatic circle. From training forms to training contents, the practical works of the Confucius Institutes were highlighted aiming to effectively improve trainee’s cross-cultural communication skills, execution skills, group coordination skills, Chinese language teaching for speakers of other languages and cultural activity organizational skills.

Trainees believe that the training design is scientific and reasonable and the training is effective and practical. Through this training, directors have a better understanding of their roles and expand their international vision. They are more confident in fulfilling their duties.
