I SING BEIJING - Hanyu Academy of Vocal Arts, hosted by Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters, was held at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing on August 28. Twenty one young vocalists from 6 countries including USA, Italy and Canada and 10 outstanding Chinese young vocalists performed in Chinese the excerpts of a few modern Chinese operas and Chinese songs.

The Chinese and overseas vocalists sang the famous modern Chinese operas and Chinese songs such as “the White-haired Girl”, “Yellow River Cantata”, “the Wilderness”, “Sister Jiang”, and “On the Field of Hope”. Furthermore, they also performed the classical western operas and songs such as “Madame Butterfly”, “the Tales of Hoffmann”, “Porgy and Bess” among others, by integrating the Chinese elements into the Western vocal performance.

The concert was given to present the achievements of I SING BEIJING - Hanyu Academy of Vocal Arts, sponsored by Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters. This program was launched in January this year. After several rounds of strict selection, 21 foreign young vocalists from 6 countries stayed on the final list. Starting from July 28, they joined 10 outstanding Chinese vocalists in Beijing for five-week training on Chinese language and Chinese and western opera performance.

The vocalists also plan to give a performance at Lincoln Center, New York in February 2013 so as to stimulate foreign students’ passion for learning Chinese.

To date, the Confucius Institute Headquarters has established 509 Confucius Classrooms in primary and secondary schools and 387 Confucius Institutes in 108 countries and regions that have 86% of the world population. With the concerted efforts of both parties, Confucius Institute has become a comprehensive platform for educational and cultural exchanges between China and the other parts of the world.
