Uproar in Heaven by High School Students
Short Drama “Journey to the West” Staged at the Chinese Language Teaching Site at G. Falcone Language Senior High School affiliated to the Confucius Institute at the University of Milan
A short drama “Journey to the West”was played by 16 students from G. Falcone Language Senior High School at Oratorio Di Loreto Theatre in Bergamo, near Milan at about 8:00pm on June 5, 2012. The Theatre, with a sitting capacity of 500 spectators, was all packed.
Prof. Jin Zhigang, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Milan, addressed the Opening Ceremony, indicating that as an important project supported by the CI in 2012, the performance of China’s traditional drama “Journey to the West” represents a best test to what the students have learned about Chinese language and traditional Chinese culture. Going forward, the CI will provide more support for projects as such.
The performance was an excerpt from Uproar in Heaven from “Journey to the West”. Emperor of Heaven standing high above the masses, thrusting Queen of Heaven, seven elegant faires and mighty and perky divine troops were perfectly acted by the students who speak standard Chinese. The Monkey King, played by Giorgio Cunsolo, seems like the real Monkey King with red lips and white teeth, sharp eyes, totally attracting the audience as if they are travelling around the pavilions in the heavenly palace. Here, they can experience the unique charisma of China’s classical literature in person. The excellent performance received rounds of enthusiastic applauses from the audience.
The performance was part of the extracurricular activities of students learning Chinese at G. Falcone Language Senior High School in Bergamo. Under the guidance of teacher Silvia Dolci and local Chinese teacher Zhu Sha of the CI, the students completed play writing, rehearsal and performance in three months.
Reportedly, G. Falcone Language Senior High School will join hands with the CI to prepare for short play “Romance of the Three Kingdoms”. We believe they will provide more wonderful performance by then.
