Zagreb, May 21 (Xinhuanet) (Xinhua News Agency reporters Li Zhongfa, Tian Fan and People's Daily reporter Ma Jian), the sun is bright in May and the spring breeze brings warmth to Zagreb.

On May 19, 2012 local time, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the NPC Wu Bangguo paid a special visit to the University of Zagreb to attend the Inauguration Ceremony of the first Confucius Institute in Croatia during his goodwill visit in Croatia.

A sound relationship between two countries lies in close relationship between the people. In recent years, people-to-people communication between China and Croatia is gaining momentum, and traditional friendship is also deepening. During his visit in Croatia, Chairman Wu Bangguo stressed on several occasions the significance of enhancing cultural exchanges and promoting friendly affection between people of the two countries. The first-ever Confucius institute in Croatia is inaugurated at the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, which not only best interprets friendship of the civil society, but also will certainly be a new bridge for people-to-people communication of the two sides.

At 9am, Chairman Wu Bangguo and his wife Zhang Ruizhen, accompanied by Boris Šprem and his wife, arrived at the Confucius Institute at University of Zagreb situated in the University Students Center. Chairman Wu and his delegation were warmly welcomed by Aleksa Bjeliš, President of the Zagreb University, Krešimir Jurak, Director of the Croatian side of the Confucius Institute as well as teachers and students. Chairman Wu shook hands with teachers and students and sent greetings to them.

The Confucius Institute is surrounded by a lively and warm atmosphere: red lanterns and Chinese knots, Chinese calligraphy works here and there, Chinese ink and wash and paper-cut, Chinese performing arts shown on TV......all these shows strong Chinese cultural atmosphere. One thousand and five hundred volumes of Chinese language teaching materials presented by the Chinese side on the tables point to profound sentiments and friendship of the Chinese people.

The inauguration ceremony was hosted by President Aleksa Bjeliš, amid the expectation of people presented at the event, Chairman Wu and Boris Šprem slowly unveiled red cloth covering the plate. The black "Confucius Institute" on the golden plate is extraordinarily striking. Teachers and students clapped enthusiastically to celebrate the establishment of the first Confucius Institute in Croatia.

Chairman Wu carefully asked study of students and encouraged them to learn well Chinese and understand Chinese culture and tradition to be carrier of Sino-Croatian friendship. Chairman Wu noted that: "China and Croatia are countries with charms, China has a 5000-year history and splendid culture, and its people are hospitable. We welcome you to go to China to experience broad and profound Chinese culture."

"I hope that you will learn Chinese language well to serve as envoy of friendship between the two countries, " said Chairman Wu Bangguo.

Chairman Wu also learned about work and life of Chinese teachers who go to Croatia to teach Chinese, and encouraged them to work even harder to make new contribution to the dissemination of Chinese culture and enhancement of friendship between the two people.

Teachers and students applauded warmly and laughed happily at Chairman Wu's cordial yet humorous remarks.

Chairman Wu Bangguo then entered into painting and calligraphy classroom to enjoy students’ exercises, and he nodded heads from time to time favorably. Chairman Wu wrote "Eternal Friendship between Chinese and Croatian People" to demonstrate expectation of the Chinese leaders on maintaining friendship generation from generation between the two peoples.

Singing songs to welcome distinguished guests and dancing to express sincere friendship. Croatian students in national costumes of Chinese and Croatia presented artistic shows with strong Chinese appeal. "Song and Smile" is melodic and melodious, "You and Me", the theme song for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games contains deep affection and is meaningful; two female students danced along with the Yunnan song "Wedding Oath" played by cucurbit flute, which is full of distinctive national feature.

"This is a minority dance of China, and China is home to 56 nations." Chairman Wu Bangguo introduced to Boris Šprem sitting beside him while enjoying the songs and dances with interest. Chairman Wu clapped hands by following the rhythm and appreciated outstanding performance of the students.

Due to tight schedule, Chairman Wu Bangguo stayed in the university for a short time before he waved farewell to teachers and students, who showed their reluctance to separate and their warm applause expressed confidence and hope in carrying on Sino-Croatian friendship.

Marin Mikulic, a young Croatian people in his national costume can't conceal his excitement: "Chairman Wu's speech draws close the distance, and gives me resolution in learning Chinese language, and I hope to have a deeper understanding about the Chinese culture through learning Chinese language."

At this moment, beautiful songs are still echoed over the Zagreb city, being felt by more Croatian people......
