The Fourth Confucius Institute in Belgium Inaugurated
Chinese State Councilor Mdm. Liu Yandong and Mr. Carl Decaluwé, the Governor of West Flanders Province, Belgium jointly launching the Confucius Institute at Howest University
Brussels, April 19 (People.com.cn) (Reporter: Sun Tianren) The Confucius Institute jointly established by Howest University, Belgium and Zhejiang Gongshang University, China was inaugurated in Brugge in the morning of April 19 local time, representing the fourth of its kind established in Belgium. During her visit in Belgium, Chinese State Councilor Mdm. Liu Yandong, together with Mr. Carl Decaluwé, Governor of West Flanders Province, Belgium, launched the Confucius Institute at Howest University.
As the second largest educational establishment in West Flanders Province, Belgium, Howest University was established in 1995 as a result of the merger of 5 schools, including Brugge Teacher Training School set up in 1849 (later State Normal School) and Kortrijk Industrial Technology School established in 1866.
Howest University puts high on the agenda international communication and exchanges and has entered into partnerships with over 120 colleges and universities all around the globe. In 2010, Howest signed a framework cooperation agreement with Zhejiang Gongshang University. Since then, both sides have engaged in productive communication and cooperation on such fronts as exchanges among teachers and students and academic cooperation. In 2011, the University made available Chinese language courses and now it has over 80 students learning Chinese. Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters dispatched a government-sponsored Chinese language teacher to the University in 2011 to support its endeavor in Chinese language education.
