Confucius Institute at Zayed University in UAE Officially Inaugurates

Xinhuanet, Abu Dhabi, March 7th, by An Jiang—An unveiling ceremony was held for the Confucius Institute at Zayed University on the university’s new campus in the suburbs of Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. The Institute was established by Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters in collaboration with Zayed University. Its Chinese partner is Beijing Foreign Studies University.

At the ceremony, Hanban’s Deputy Director-General Mr. Hu Zhiping read a congratulatory letter from Ms. Xu Lin, Director-General of Hanban and Chief Executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters. In her letter, Ms. Xu said that the Confucius Institute will serve as an important platform for local people to learn Chinese language and culture, and to deepen mutual understanding and friendship between the Chinese and UAE people. She expressed her confidence that through close cooperation between the two sides, the Confucius Institute will be run successfully and play an important role in promoting cooperation and exchanges of China with UAE and other countries in the Gulf Area.

Amidst warm applause, Mr. Hu Zhiping unveiled the nameplate for the Confucius Institute together with Mr. Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and President of the Zayed University.

After the ceremony, students learning Chinese language at the Brighton College Abu Dhabi performed a Chinese song entitled “May You Be Prosperous”. Two students from the Confucius Institute recited modern Chinese poet Xu Zhimo’s “Saying Goodbye to Cambridge Again”. The highlights of the show were performances by the Student Art Troupe of Dalian University of Foreign Languages, including Chinese folk instruments ensembles, Zhuang folk songs and dances as well as a Han costume show.

Mr. Wang Yongzhao, Charge d' Affaires ad Interim of the Chinese Embassy in UAE, Ms. Zhong Meisun, Vice President of Beijing Foreign Studies University, Sulaiman Al Jassim, General Director of Zayed University, as well as some Foreign Diplomatic Envoys in UAE, local intellectuals and journalists, and representatives of overseas Chinese, a total of nearly 500 people were present at the ceremony and enjoyed the show.
