Unveiling Ceremony and New Year Event Held by Confucius Institute in Coquitlam

As appointed by Hanban, the Central China Normal University Art Troupe staged a performance entitled "Grand New Year Celebration - Confucius Institute Grand Spring Festival Gala" at Michael J Fox Theatre on February 13, 2012. The event was undertaken by Confucius Institute in Coquitlam and jointly held by Association of Chinese Cultural Promotion - Canada.

A host of distinguished guests were present at the celebration, including Ms. Xue Wanbai, Counselor of Education at Chinese Consulate-General in Vancouver, Mr. Richard Steward, Mayor of Coquitlam, Ms. Melissa Hyndes, Chair of Coquitlam Board of Education, Mr. Tom Grant, Superintendent of Superintendent of School District No. 43 (Coquitlam), Ms. Patricia Gartland, Assistant Superintendent of Superintendent of School District No. 43 (Coquitlam) & Director of Confucius Institute in Coquitlam, Mr. Xie Boheng, Life Honorary President of Association of Chinese Cultural Promotion - Canada and a famous overseas Chinese in Vancouver, and Ms. Huang Xiaomei, Deputy President of Central China Normal University.

Some spectators came to the scene at dusk when there's still one hour to go before the performance. Entering the door, visitors were immediately impressed by the strong and rich Chinese characters. The exhibition wall near the door displayed pictures of activities of all kinds held by Confucius Institute in Coquitlam since its beginning. Many visitors stopped to read over the year book of Confucius Institute. On the other side, is on-site performance of Guzheng, a 21-or 25-stringed plucked instrument where elegant "the Night of Spring Flowers, River, and Moon" brought people to China far away from the scene, tranquility and dedication were acutely felt by visitors. On the site of performing traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy, a cursive handwriting "Carry Forward Chinese Culture" was hanged in the rear, perfectly complementing the significance of the Gala.

At 7:00pm, the Gala was kicked off. The unveiling ceremony of Confucius Institute in Coquitlam was officially started after remarks delivered by distinguished guest. Officially approved by Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters for its establishment in December 2011, Confucius Institute in Coquitlam is the successor to Confucius Classroom in Coquitlam. The plaque of the Institute was jointly unveiled by distinguished guests, including Mr. Tom Grant, Ms. Xue Wanbai and Ms. Patricia Gartland. Accompanied by thunderous applause, Confucius Institute in Coquitlam took a solid and steady step towards a whole new future.

Then, the performance was officially kick-started. Dance, song, martial arts, ensemble of traditional instruments, Peking Opera, orchestral music...wonderful programs one after another were presented to visitors. Deeply impressed by Chinese uniqueness and Chinese arts, each and every audience applauded and acclaimed from time to time. Apart from the programs performed by the Central China Normal University Art Troupe, the undertaker also invited local performance group in Vancouver to perform at the event.

Ms. Melissa Hyndes and Ms. Patricia Gartland presented souvenirs to the Central China Normal University Art Troupe, which were accepted by Ms. Huang Xiaomei on behalf of the Art Troupe.
