January 24, 2012 is also the second day of the Chinese Lunar New Year, the central garden of Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia was filled with flying colored flags. Traditional Chinese new year decorations, such as red lanterns, twelve zodiac animals, palace lanterns and Chinese knots appeared extremely beautiful against the setting of green trees and flowers.

"2012 Happy Spring Festival & Chinese Culture Appreciation Event", jointly hosted by the Confucius Institute at Addis Ababa University and the Institute of Language Studies, Addis Ababa University, got into its stride at 10:30am with Gao Lili, Director of the CI as the moderator. Dr. Admassu Tsegaye, President of Addis Ababa University delivered a speech in which he expressed his warm welcome to person-in-charge of Chinese Embassy in Ethiopia, representatives of government departments of Ethiopia, and representatives of Chinese-funded companies operating in Ethiopia, and expressed his heartfelt appreciation to the CI for its efforts in establishing and running the Chinese Teaching Site at Addis Ababa University and the contributions made by the CI in opening the Chinese Language Course at Addis Ababa University. He expressed his expectation that Addis Ababa University and the CI can maintain and strengthen friendly cooperation, promote the further development of Chinese Language Course and hoped that the CI and the Chinese Language Center at Addis Ababa University can embrace a still beautiful future. Then, Counselor Zheng Guojin, Cultural Division of Chinese Embassy in Ethiopia made his remarks. He expressed his thanks to Addis Ababa University for supporting this Spring Festival Celebration and offered his congratulations to the CI for what it achieved in the past year in promoting Chinese language and culture. He indicated that Addis Ababa University is the most famous and time-honored university in Ethiopia, hoping the CI and University can boost cooperation, making new contributions to the promotion of Chinese language teaching and cultural exchanges between the two countries. Later, students of the CI staged excellent Chinese performances.

Following the event, guests and students of the Universities appreciated traditional Chinese cultural programs, such as tea art, paper cutting, calligraphy and watched the exhibition of traditional decorations and pictures of Chinese Spring Festival.

To facilitate the Spring Festival Celebration, Chinese Embassy in Ethiopia provided strong support and the Cultural Division provided all the decorations, pictures and souvenirs on display.
