About Mr. Yuan Xingpei

Mr. Yuan Xingpei was born in 1936 in Wujin, Jiangsu Province. He graduated from the Department of Chinese Language and Literature of Peking University in 1957, and is currently professor, doctoral supervisor, and director of the Institute for the Study of Traditional Chinese Culture, Peking University. He has served as a member of the Eighth and Ninth Standing Committees of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and member of the Tenth Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress. He is also Vice Chairman of the China Democratic League, President of the Central Research Institute of Culture and History, and member of the State Council Academic Degree Committee.

He served as visiting teacher at the University of Tokyo in Japan from April 1982 to March 1983, and visiting professor at the National University of Singapore from July 1992 to September 1993. He was a visiting research fellow at the Harvard-Yenching Institute, Harvard University from September 1997 to December 1997, and visiting professor at the City University of Hong Kong from September 2004 to November 2004. He has been a part-time professor of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore since September 2005 (co-recruited with Peking University). He also lectures at Aichi University of Japan, Harvard University, Yale University, Columbia University, the University of Washington, the University of Hawaii and other universities in the United States, as well as the University of Hong Kong and National Taiwan University.
