CRI Online, January 10th, by Shen Ting—The exhibition entitled “Aspiring for World Peace, Friendship and Prosperity–Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition in Celebration of the 2012 Chinese New Year” was inaugurated on January 10th. The event was co-sponsored by the Permanent Mission of China to the UN and Hanban. Exhibits included calligraphic works of some UN officials, as well as paintings and the calligraphic works of some well-known Chinese artists.

A total of 150 guests, including UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and his wife; UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Hervé Ladsous; UN Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information, Kiyotaka Akasaka; China's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Li Baodong, and his wife; Deputy Consul General of Consulate-General of China in New York, Dong Xiaojun; Permanent Representatives of Thailand and South Korea to the UN; as well as diplomats from various countries, UN officials, and members of the Chinese and foreign media attended the opening ceremony.

In his speech, H.E. Mr. Ban Ki-moon stated that Chinese calligraphy is not only an art form, but also a kind of tool that helps people communicate with each other. He added that calligraphy practice helped him understand the essence of calligraphy, which is to cultivate moral character and nourish human nature, and also helped him make friends with people from different countries and backgrounds. H.E. Mr. Ban also presented a piece of his calligraphic works that inscribed with the character of “Heping (peace)”, which indicates the goals of the UN. He also greeted other guests with “Happy New Year” in Chinese.

Afterward, H.E. Mr. Li Baodong delivered a speech. He stated that although there are a great many styles of Chinese calligraphy, the different styles co-exist in harmony in the development of calligraphy, which is in perfect accordance with the spirit of the multicultural co-existence advocated by the UN. Li said that practicing calligraphy not only helps one cultivate his/her mind, but also helps him/her make friends and improve communication with others. There are a large number of calligraphy enthusiasts and collectors in the UN and many other countries in the world. Finally, he expressed his wish that under the leadership of H.E. Mr. Ban Ki-moon, the UN will continue to achieve new accomplishments and make greater contributions to noble cause of peace and development of mankind.

The exhibition will be held till January 13th.
