Xinhua News Agency Bangkok Bureau, December 24 (reporting by Qian Tong and Shi Xianzhen). On December 24 local time, Vice-President Xi Jinping paid a visit to the Confucius Institute at Chulalongkorn University during his visit to Thailand.

Vice-President Xi Jinping arrived at the Confucius Institute at Chulalongkorn University at 10:20 a.m. He was greeted by Lion Dances and drumming performance and a thunderous round of applause on the campus. Teacher and student representatives from Chulalongkorn University and the Confucius Institute waved the national flags of China and Thailand on both sides along the road, extending their warmest welcome to Vice-President Xi Jinping. President of Chulalongkorn University Prof. Pirom Kamol-Ratanakul and Director-General of Hanban Xu Lin awaited his arrival at the gate.

Soon after, Xi Jinping arrived at the university’s assembly hall. There wasn’t a single empty seat in the hall which could hold over 2,000 people. The teachers and students in attendance welcomed the Vice-President with a standing ovation, and the band performed the national anthems of China and Thailand. Vice-President Kalaya Tingsabadh presided over the ceremony.

Chinese and Thai teacher and student representatives of Chulalongkorn University and Confucius Institutes and Classrooms throughout Thailand came together to give a magnificent program of cultural performances. Events such as the “Welcome Dance” rich in Thai style, recitation of the deep and thought-provoking poem “Markets in the Sky”, the melodious “Kangding Love Song” which Chinese are greatly familiar with, the vigorous and energetic martial arts “Chinese Ink Dance”, and the writing of the Chinese characters for “Sino-Thai friendship” in beautiful Chinese calligraphy script by a Thai student, gathered a warm round of applause and gave the event an atmosphere of excitement.

Xi Jinping made an address brimming with enthusiasm to the eager anticipation and warm applause of over 2,000 students and teachers in the audience. He highly praised the important contributions made by Chulalongkorn University in teaching the Chinese language and spreading Chinese culture, and expressed that Chulalongkorn University is Thailand’s most reputable institute of higher education, cultivating numerous prominent talented individuals in the fields of Thai politics, economics, technology, culture, etc. The Confucius Institute at Chulalongkorn University currently offers very unique courses in Chinese language, calligraphy, painting, and martial arts, has held various types of Chinese competitions, celebrations of traditional Chinese festivals and lectures on Chinese culture, has received widespread attention from student youths and all sections of society, and has played an important role in deepening the traditional friendship between the peoples of China and Thailand.

Xi Jinping stated that China and Thailand have enjoyed over a thousand years of friendly relations as close neighbors, and the peoples of both countries commonly share feelings like those of a family, and that it is the common desire of the peoples of both China and Thailand to pass down Sino-Thai friendship for generations to come. Xi Jinping expressed that he brought with him the sincere condolences of the Chinese people for the people of Thailand on the occasion of their overcoming the serious flooding, and also expressed the sincere desire of the Chinese government to develop Sino-Thai friendship and cooperation. Xi Jinping said that he believes China and Thailand will forever live in harmony, and that the two countries are good neighbors, good partners, good friends, and good relatives who always stand together in times of need.

Xi Jinping said that cultural exchanges are an important bond which enhance mutual understanding between peoples of all nations, and that he hopes for the Confucius Institute at Chulalongkorn University and other Confucius Institutes in Thailand to take this opportunity to fully play a role as a comprehensive platform for cultural exchanges, and make new contributions to advancing friendship and understanding between the peoples of China and Thailand, promoting equal cooperation and mutual benefit between China and Thailand, and promoting mutual studying and borrowing between different human civilizations.

Finally, Xi Jinping expressed that youths are the future of a country, and the hope of a nation. Princess Sirindhorn personally inscribed the Chinese saying for “the burden is heavy and the road is long”, which shows her earnest expectations for the young generation. Youths of China and Thailand shoulder the burden of the historically important task of carrying forward and developing Sino-Thai friendship. Xi Jinping expressed his wish for Thai youths to widely persevere in studying and mastering Chinese language and culture, to never stop advancing their understanding and knowledge of China, and to protect, carry forth, and advance Sino-Thai friendship for generations to come.

President of Chulalongkorn University Prof. Pirom Kamol-Ratanakul represented the teachers and students of the university in giving a warm welcome to Vice-President Xi’s visit and expressed that it is an honor for Chulalongkorn University to receive Vice-President Xi, and that the visit has enormously encouraged Chulalongkorn University to give its long-term commitment to Sino-Thai cultural exchanges. He stated that Chulalongkorn University is willing to take the opportunity of Vice-President Xi’s visit to further strengthen cooperation with China in the areas of Chinese language education and cultural exchange, and to make persistent efforts in advancing friendship between the peoples of China and Thailand and cultivating even more talented individuals dedicated to Sino-Thai friendship.

Xi Jinping also presented the Confucius Institute at Chulalongkorn University with books on Chinese language teaching and Chinese culture.

After the conclusion of the activities, Xi Jinping visited the photography exhibition of the educational achievements of Confucius Institutes in Thailand, and learned about the situation of Thai Confucius Institutes and Classrooms in the areas of teaching, training of teachers, and activities and exchanges, and posed for a group photo with directors and teacher representatives from Confucius Institutes and Classrooms throughout Thailand who made a special trip for the occasion.
