December 12, the Opening Ceremony of the 6th Confucius Institute Conference was held at the National Centre for the Performing Arts, Beijing. December 12, Xinhua News Agency (reporting by Hao Yalin), the Opening Ceremony of the 6th Confucius Institute Conference was held on the evening of December 12 at the National Centre for the Performing Arts, Beijing. Politburo Standing Committee member Li Changchun attended the ceremony, and presented recipients with the Confucius Institute Individual Performance Excellence Award and the Award for Outstanding Contributions and observed the “I Sing Beijing” music program by foreign singers. Li Changchun expressed his warmest congratulations toward the recipients, encouraging them to never stop gaining experience, to strengthen exchanges, to enhance their understanding of China through their studies, to strengthen exchange and cooperation in cultural education between China and other countries, and to promote making new contributions to mutual learning and sharing between different cultures in order to deepen the friendship between China and all peoples of the world.

Member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China, State Councilor, and Chairperson of the Council of Confucius Institute Headquarters Liu Yandong attended the opening ceremony and delivered an address, while also presenting recipients with awards. She pointed out that in the eight years since the founding of Confucius Institutes, there have been heartening achievements in the field of international Chinese education, there has been rapid growth in the number of learners of Chinese, there have been rich and varied exchanges in language and culture, not only expanding new space for the personal development of Chinese and foreign teachers and students but also building an important platform for cultural exchanges, playing the role of a bridge and ties in promoting friendly relations between peoples of the world and the development of state relations. Confucius Institutes have brought Chinese to all corners of the world, while also bringing the language and cultures of all countries into China, sowing the seeds of communication, understanding, harmony and friendship in the youths of each country, and yielding positive results. \

Liu Yandong emphasized that the economic globalization of today’s world continues to deepen, humanity cohabites the same global village, and enhances communication and cooperation as the mutual decision of each country. China’s development is inevitably linked to the world, and the prosperity and stability of the world are also inevitably linked to China. Under such a background, the distinctive value and significance of exchanges in language and culture in this day and age are made all the more prominent, making the study and use of a country’s language a way of further strengthening the societal foundation for friendship between countries. The Chinese government actively supports the cooperation between China and other countries in establishing and running Confucius Institutes in order to satisfy the pressing desire of the people of all countries to learn Chinese. She expressed her hope for Confucius Institutes to focus on improving quality, making great efforts to run each and every Confucius Institute to the best of its ability. Oriented toward prominent characteristics, Confucius Institutes aim to better meet the diversified needs of each country. Taking cultural exchanges as bonds, Confucius Institutes make full use of their role as a platform of comprehensive cultural exchange, becoming the forerunners of culture exchanges, promoters of friendly relations and builders of a harmonious world for the friendship and understanding of the Chinese people and all peoples of the world; Confucius Institutes work to harmoniously and mutually make new contributions for equal cooperation and mutual profitability for the various cultures of the world.

After the opening ceremony, the “I Sing Beijing” music program opened with the magnificent “Ode to the Yellow River”. Singers from seven countries such as the United States and Canada entered the stage in succession, performing universally acclaimed famous Chinese and foreign songs and opera selections such as “Madam Butterfly”, “The White Haired Girl”, “Heavenly Road”, “The Red Guards on Honghu Lake” and ”West Side Story”; the American and Italian singers jointly performed the Yangge Opera “A Couple Learning to Read”; a Canadian singer performed a selection from the Peking Opera piece “Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy”; Brazilian and American singers made an excellent performance of “In the Field of Hope”; singers from such countries as Mexico, Canada, Italy, Latvia and Uruguay also performed a selection from the 14-part ensemble “Hansi Zhilu” . Singers from each country made exquisite performances, using excellent Chinese to express to the audience their enthusiasm and achievements in their studies of Chinese language and culture. The performance incorporated both Chinese and Western elements, and the audience gave a heartfelt round of applause for the splendid show. The singers brimmed with passion as they performed the closing song “I Love You, China”. At the end, Li Changchun came onto the stage and praised the young performers for their outstanding performances, cordially shaking hands and posing for photos with them.

In order to further enrich international Chinese education and enhance cultural exchange and cooperation between China and other countries, Confucius Institute Headquarters held the first “I Sing Beijing – Hanyu Academy of Vocal Arts” program in 2010, attracting widespread attention from the international vocal music world. Through a strict selection process, 20 youth vocalists were chosen from over 200 applicants, and received short-term Chinese classes and training in Chinese musical performances in China.

The annual Confucius Institute Conference is aimed at providing a platform for experience sharing, strengthening cooperation, and keeping close contact between global Confucius Institutes, with six conferences being held since 2006. This year’s conference lasts for two days and takes the theme of “The Coming Ten Years for Confucius Institutes”, attracting the attendance of over 2,000 university presidents and Confucius Institute representatives from 105 countries and regions. The conference features speeches by university presidents, Confucius Institute directors, and student representatives from such countries as the United States, Brazil, Thailand, and Botswana at the opening ceremony. During the conference, there are also activities such as Principals’ Forums, Confucius Institute Directors’ Forums, and an international teaching materials exhibit.
