The Chinese Ambassador to Spain Bangzao Zhu visited the Confucius Institute at the University of Valencia
On November 28th, 2011, University of Valencia welcomed the fourth anniversary of the establishment of the Confucius Institute. With the invitation of Mr. President Esteban Morcillo, Chinese Ambassador to Spain Bangzao Zhu and several other people came to University of Valencia. After visiting the Library of University of Valencia, they came to the Confucius Institute and attended the fourth anniversary of the opening ceremony and some other related cultural activities.
The opening ceremony was presided over by Mr. Esteban Morcillo. He first welcomed the coming of the Chinese Ambassador and thanked the help and support of Chinese embassy to the Confucius Institute for many years. After several years of efforts, several departments in University of Valencia have set up China-related courses and research projects. The size, quality and level of Chinese language teaching in the Confucius Institute are growing rapidly, so did the spread and social impact of Chinese culture activities. He said that he would continue to support the Confucius Institute as president.
Local Director of the Confucius Institute gave a speech on behalf of the Confucius Institute at University of Valencia. After welcoming all the guests, leaders and friends, he gave a brief review to summarize the four years of glorious history and rich fruits of the Confucius Institute. At the beginning of the establishment of the institute, there were only 50 students learned Chinese. Now more than 1200 students register throughout the year and the annual average of various activities are more than 40. Confucius Institute have edited 9 issues Chinese – Spanish《Confucius Institute 》, each issuing 6000 volumes and having electronic version on the web page. It also earned advanced Confucius Institute and excellence individual award recognized by Hanban.
Ambassador Zhu first expressed warm congratulations on the fourth anniversary of the establishment of Confucius Institute in his speech. He said when he just came to Spain to work, there were only 4 Confucius Institutes in Spain. After successfully holding Spanish Chinese year this year, the Confucius Institutes have increased to six. The Confucius Institute at the University of Valencia in Spain has the most distinctive characteristics and the most remarkable achievements. It has a long history of exchanges between the two countries. The first book about introducing Chinese culture to the West is written by Spanish. Only in Beijing there are more than 3000 Chinese students studying in Cervantes Spanish School and 42 universities in China offer Spanish courses. Valencia has a long history and beautiful scenery. As ambassador in Spain , he would be willing to make contribution to promoting the economic cooperation and cultural exchanges between the two countries.
After the ceremony, the teachers and students at the Confucius Institute, along with 300 people from different walks of life listened to the lecture “red in Chinese culture”. The lecture was lively and easy to understand. It also introduced the Symbolic meaning of “red” in Chinese weddings and funerals as well as revolutionary culture through presenting pictures. In order to celebrate the ceremony, the teachers and students at the Confucius Institute also performed cross talks written by themselves , songs, dances and some other professional programs, such as Lion Dance and face changing. After the performance ended, they visited the exhibition called “red” which include photography works, students’ works of calligraphy and Chinese books exhibition.
